Job Overview:
The Senior Project Associate will play a crucial role within the Protection Unit (PXU) under the Migrant Protection and Assistance sub-unit. This position involves supporting the implementation of legal aid and protection interventions aimed at assisting migrants in vulnerable situations. The successful candidate will facilitate access to legal assistance and representation, coordinate referrals with legal service providers and government counterparts, and support initiatives related to legal identity registration. The role also includes strengthening coordination with relevant authorities responsible for civil registration, documentation, justice, and protection services. The incumbent will be expected to contribute to capacity-building initiatives concerning migrant rights, legal identity, access to justice, trafficking in persons, and protection-sensitive assistance. Additionally, the Senior Project Associate will provide support to other protection teams and coordinate with various programmatic units within the mission, ensuring a comprehensive approach to migrant protection and assistance.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Senior Project Associate include: assisting in the planning, coordination, implementation, and monitoring of legal aid, legal identity, and access-to-justice activities for migrants in vulnerable situations; compiling, summarizing, analyzing, and presenting information/data on legal aid, legal identity, civil documentation, and protection issues; monitoring budget implementation and proposing necessary adjustments; acting as a focal point for administrative coordination of legal aid and legal identity activities; drafting status reports and identifying shortfalls in service delivery; organizing meetings, workshops, and training sessions related to migrant rights and legal identity; responding to complex information requests and inquiries; participating in meetings and conferences; monitoring the work of implementing partners and service providers; providing inputs for the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and concept papers; and performing other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a school diploma with six years of relevant experience or a Bachelor’s degree in law, Human Rights, Political or Social Sciences, International Relations, Development Studies, Migration Studies, Public Administration, Governance, Legal Studies, or related fields from an accredited academic institution with four years of relevant professional experience. Accredited universities are those listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database. The position requires experience working with government justice institutions, civil registration authorities, legal aid providers, bar associations, non-governmental organizations, and UN agencies. Experience in legal aid programming, protection case management, legal referrals, or assistance to migrants in vulnerable situations is preferred, along with experience in organizing events, workshops, and meetings.
Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a school diploma with six years of relevant experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as law, Human Rights, Political or Social Sciences, International Relations, Development Studies, Migration Studies, Public Administration, Governance, Legal Studies, or related fields from an accredited institution. The degree must be from a recognized university listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database, ensuring that candidates have a solid academic foundation relevant to the responsibilities of the role.
Experience:
The ideal candidate should have a minimum of four years of relevant professional experience if holding a Bachelor’s degree, or six years if holding a school diploma. Experience working with government justice institutions, civil registration authorities, legal aid providers, bar associations, non-governmental organizations, and UN agencies is preferred. Additionally, candidates should have experience in legal aid programming, protection case management, legal referrals, or assistance to migrants in vulnerable situations. Familiarity with legal identity, civil registration, and documentation initiatives is advantageous, as is experience in organizing events, workshops, and meetings.
Languages:
Fluency in English and Amharic is required for this position, both oral and written. All IOM staff members are required to be fluent in one of the IOM's official languages, which include English, French, and Spanish. Knowledge of other Ethiopian national languages such as Afaan Oromo, Somali, and Tigrinya is desirable. Proficiency in the required languages will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.

The position may involve a contract duration that is subject to funding confirmation. The selected candidate will be expected to adhere to IOM's zero-tolerance policy on conduct that is incompatible with the aims and objectives of the United Nations and IOM.
