Job Overview:
The UN Volunteer – Gender Mainstreaming Commissioner position focuses on promoting gender equality through community-based health initiatives that incorporate biomedical engineering concepts. The role involves working collaboratively with fellow volunteers to enhance awareness of health technologies and advocate for equitable access to healthcare services. The assignment aims to ensure that all community members, including women, men, girls, boys, and persons with disabilities, benefit equally from health innovations. The position emphasizes the importance of integrating gender considerations into all activities and initiatives, thereby fostering inclusive research and innovation in healthcare.

Duties and Responsibilities:
As a Gender Mainstreaming Commissioner, the responsibilities include integrating gender perspectives into biomedical engineering projects and health programs, conducting gender analyses to identify barriers to healthcare technology access, and raising awareness about gender equality in science, technology, and healthcare. The role also involves collaborating with governments, NGOs, healthcare institutions, and research organizations to promote inclusive innovation, monitoring and evaluating the gender impact of biomedical engineering initiatives, and supporting capacity-building activities that empower women and girls to participate in STEM and biomedical engineering fields. Additionally, the commissioner will conduct community awareness sessions, support health education campaigns, and work with healthcare providers to identify gender-related barriers in accessing healthcare technologies.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates should possess strong analytical skills, particularly in conducting gender analyses and evaluating the impact of health technologies. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential for collaborating with diverse stakeholders, including community leaders, healthcare providers, and fellow volunteers. A demonstrated commitment to gender equality and inclusive healthcare practices is crucial, along with the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Familiarity with biomedical engineering concepts and health technologies is advantageous, as is experience in community outreach and education.

Educational Background:
A background in biomedical engineering, public health, gender studies, or a related field is preferred. Candidates should have a solid understanding of gender issues in healthcare and the ability to apply this knowledge in practical settings. Relevant certifications or training in gender mainstreaming, health technology, or community engagement will be considered an asset.

Experience:
Candidates should have prior experience in community service, volunteer work, or roles that involve gender advocacy and health promotion. Experience in conducting workshops, awareness campaigns, or educational programs related to healthcare technologies and gender equality is highly desirable. Familiarity with the challenges faced by underserved populations in accessing healthcare services will be beneficial.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the primary language of communication for this role. Proficiency in Swahili or other local languages is considered a strong asset, as it will facilitate better engagement with community members and stakeholders.

This position is a remote volunteer assignment, allowing for flexibility in working hours. The role is part-time and may require a commitment of several hours per week, depending on project needs. Volunteers will receive support and training from ACFMT to enhance their capacity in gender mainstreaming and biomedical engineering.
