Job Overview: The Associate Director, Development and Outreach position at Human Rights Watch is a full-time role based in the Los Angeles office, specifically in Santa Monica. Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Associate Director include, but are not limited to: collaborating with the Los Angeles Director on fundraising strategies; managing a portfolio of donors and soliciting major gifts; expanding and diversifying support for HRW through research and outreach; supervising the Associate and leading fundraising events; overseeing Committee communications and initiatives; managing the development and implementation of strategic plans; liaising with event consultants; overseeing gift processing and donor support services in Salesforce; maintaining donor lists and fundraising reports; leading team processes and meetings; mentoring direct reports; and performing additional responsibilities as required. This role demands strong leadership skills, the ability to motivate and guide team members, and a commitment to fostering a positive work environment.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree in international relations, social sciences, communications/marketing, or equivalent work experience. A minimum of 7 years of experience in donor management, philanthropy, or fundraising is required, along with a proven track record of managing large-scale events. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to human rights issues and possess excellent organizational, written, and oral communication skills. The ability to build and maintain relationships with donors and volunteers is essential, as well as strong interpersonal skills for collaboration within HRW and with external partners. Proficiency in computer skills and familiarity with Salesforce, Marketing Cloud, Canva, and social media platforms are highly desirable.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as international relations, social sciences, or communications/marketing. Equivalent work experience may also be considered in lieu of a formal degree, emphasizing the importance of practical knowledge and skills in the fundraising and outreach domain.
