Job Overview: The Protection Assistant – Monitoring plays a crucial role in the implementation of protection monitoring activities within selected IDP/refugee sites and host communities in Debark, Ethiopia. Reporting to the Protection Team Leader and receiving technical supervision from the Protection Specialist – Monitoring, the assistant is responsible for conducting regular visits to monitor protection conditions, collecting and encoding relevant data, and identifying individuals at risk. The role also involves sharing information and reporting on emerging protection risks and trends, as well as providing direct assistance to individuals with specific needs. The Protection Assistant will support the implementation of various protection activities carried out by DRC in the designated project locations, ensuring that the rights and safety of vulnerable populations are prioritized and upheld.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Protection Assistant – Monitoring will be tasked with a variety of responsibilities, including but not limited to: conducting protection monitoring in assigned areas, contributing to the development and review of protection monitoring tools, and analyzing collected information in collaboration with the Protection Officer and Protection Manager. The assistant will identify protection trends and needs through Key Informant Interviews, Focus Group Discussions, and observations. They will utilize data collection systems to gather and upload data in accordance with international standards and DRC guidelines. The role requires identifying individuals at risk, providing necessary information, and referring them for specialized assistance. The assistant will also support the coordination and implementation of Individual Protection Assistance, regularly monitor beneficiaries’ access to services, and assess the effectiveness of referral services. Collaboration with Community Based Protection Networks (CBPN) is essential, as is conducting community awareness-raising activities regarding identified protection risks. The assistant will maintain good relationships with CBPNs and other stakeholders to gather information on displacements and support safe referrals. Participation in community engagement and adherence to ethical data collection protocols are also key aspects of the role, along with documenting activities for project verification and reporting purposes.
Required Qualifications: Candidates for the Protection Assistant – Monitoring position should possess a minimum of one year’s experience in an entry to mid-level role, ideally within the humanitarian response sector, particularly in refugee or IDP protection. Experience working for an international NGO, UN agency, or relevant local authority is highly desirable. Proficiency in conducting protection monitoring or assessments using online data collection tools such as Kobo and Activity Info is essential. Strong data collection, analysis, and reporting skills are required, along with experience working with displaced or conflict-affected populations. Candidates should demonstrate strong planning, organizational, and problem-solving abilities, with the capacity to work both independently and collaboratively within a team. Integrity, a strong work ethic, and the ability to meet deadlines under pressure are crucial attributes for this role. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel, is mandatory, while familiarity with data collection and analysis tools is a plus.
Educational Background: A university degree or diploma in social sciences, law, social work, international development, or a related field from a recognized institution is required for this position. Relevant certifications or licenses that enhance the candidate's qualifications may also be beneficial.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have at least one year of relevant experience in a humanitarian context, particularly in roles focused on protection monitoring or assessments. Experience working with displaced populations or in conflict-affected areas is highly valued, as is familiarity with data collection methodologies and tools.
Languages: Fluency in English, both spoken and written, is essential for this position. Proficiency in Amharic and other local languages is also required, as effective communication with diverse communities is a key aspect of the role.
