Job Overview: The Education Specialist role is designed to provide technical support and capacity building to the Ministry of Education at various levels, including district, zonal, and school levels, specifically for the effective implementation of the BeFIT programme. This position entails training and supporting District Education Officers, Primary Education Advisors (PEAs), teachers, and School Managers to successfully integrate Tablet-based learning into their teaching practices and school systems. The Education Specialist will play a crucial role in enhancing educational outcomes by equipping educators with the necessary skills and knowledge to utilize technology effectively in their classrooms. This role is pivotal in ensuring that the educational initiatives are not only implemented but are also sustainable and beneficial for the students and the community at large.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Education Specialist will be responsible for a variety of duties, including but not limited to:
Providing technical support to the Ministry of Education in the implementation of the BeFIT programme.
Conducting training sessions for District Education Officers, PEAs, teachers, and School Managers on the integration of Tablet-based learning into educational practices.
Developing training materials and resources that are tailored to the needs of the educators and the local context.
Monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of the training and support provided, making adjustments as necessary to improve outcomes.
Collaborating with local education authorities and stakeholders to ensure alignment with national education policies and strategies.
Supporting the development of a community of practice among educators to foster ongoing learning and sharing of best practices.
Engaging with students and parents to promote the benefits of technology in education and encourage community involvement in the learning process.
Reporting on progress and challenges to VSO management and the Ministry of Education, providing insights for future programming.
Required Qualifications: Candidates for the Education Specialist position must possess relevant experience in training and mentoring primary school teachers, including both in-service and student teachers. Additionally, applicants should have a valid motorcycle riding license obtained within the last two years, along with at least two years of motorcycle riding experience. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong understanding of educational practices and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups of stakeholders. Competencies such as open-mindedness, resilience, adaptability, and the ability to facilitate positive change are essential for success in this role.
Educational Background: A degree in education, social sciences, or a related field is required for the Education Specialist position. Additional certifications or training in educational technology or teacher training methodologies would be advantageous. Candidates should have a solid understanding of the educational landscape in Malawi and be familiar with current trends and challenges in primary education.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have a minimum of two years of relevant experience in training and mentoring primary school teachers. Experience working in educational settings, particularly in developing countries, is highly desirable. Familiarity with technology integration in education and previous involvement in capacity-building initiatives will be considered an asset.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory for this position, as it is the primary language of instruction and communication within the organization. Knowledge of local languages spoken in Malawi would be considered a valuable asset, as it would facilitate better communication with local stakeholders and communities.
Additional Notes: This position is a full-time volunteer role with VSO, and while the salary is not specified, volunteers will receive an allowance paid in local currency to cover reasonable living expenses in Malawi. It is important to note that the allowance may not be sufficient to send money home.
