Job Overview: The Protection Assistant - GBV Caseworker will play a crucial role in implementing Gender-Based Violence (GBV) case management activities under the supervision of the GBV Coordinator. This position is vital for providing support to GBV survivors and other beneficiaries affected by crises in the Mai-Tsebri area. The assistant will work closely with the DRC Tigray protection team, engaging in various protection-related activities, including community-based protection and legal support. The role requires a compassionate and proactive individual who can deliver high-quality case management services while adhering to DRC’s standard operating procedures (SOPs) and maintaining confidentiality. The assistant will also be responsible for conducting emotional support group sessions and providing training to community structures on GBV core concepts and safe identification and referral of cases. This position demands a commitment to a survivor-centered approach and the ability to engage effectively with the community to identify needs and gaps in GBV programming.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Protection Assistant will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including but not limited to:
Providing case management services through high-quality, confidential interventions in line with DRC’s case management SOPs.
Conducting referrals to relevant services as needed, implementing action plans, and ensuring appropriate follow-up and case closure.
Offering counseling to all survivors referred to case management services.
Conducting case management in safe spaces identified in collaboration with survivors.
Filing and storing GBV data in the GBV Information Management System (GBVIMS) in compliance with inter-agency information sharing protocols.
Facilitating emotional support group sessions for women and girls at risk of or survivors of GBV.
Supporting the delivery of basic GBV training to community structures, including sessions on GBV core concepts and guiding principles.
Identifying gaps in GBV response services and referral protocols and reporting them to the GBV Officer and Coordinator.
Ensuring regular quality implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of GBV-related projects and interventions. 1
Engaging with community representatives to understand needs and gaps in GBV programming. 1
Incorporating a survivor-centered approach in all GBV case management activities. 1
Ensuring strict adherence to confidentiality for all case-related information and protecting the identities of survivors. 1
Carrying out additional protection activities as assigned by the protection manager.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a minimum of 1 year of experience in protection, preferably with an international humanitarian organization. They should demonstrate strong organizational skills and the ability to work in complex and challenging circumstances. Experience in case management and referral-related activities is desirable, along with field experience in emergency contexts. Candidates should exhibit a high level of personal initiative, analytical skills, and proactive problem-solving abilities. Strong interpersonal skills and the capacity to develop and maintain working relationships across the organization are essential. Being a team player, demonstrating cultural sensitivity, and a commitment to DRC's values are also critical. Good communication skills and a commitment to learning and implementing organizational policies and procedures are required, along with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
Educational Background: A university degree in social work, social science, law, or a related field from a recognized institution is required for this position. Relevant certifications or licenses may also be beneficial.
Experience: The position requires at least 1 year of relevant experience in protection, ideally within an international humanitarian organization. Candidates should have demonstrated experience in case management and referral activities, as well as field experience in emergency contexts, which is highly desirable.
Languages: Fluency in written and spoken English is mandatory, along with proficiency in Amharic and Tigrinya. These language skills are essential for effective communication with beneficiaries and stakeholders in the region.
Additional Notes: The contract for this position is for a duration of 5 months, classified as a National Contract under Band I2 – Non-Management. The designated duty station for this role is Erob and Gulomeda in Ethiopia, with a start date of August 1, 202
