Job Overview: The position of Internal Research Fellow (PostDoc) in Earth Observation (EO) for Earth System Science involves a two-year research fellowship where the successful candidate will report to the Head of the Science Section in the Green Solutions Division within the Climate Action, Sustainability and Science Department of the Directorate of Earth Observation Programmes. The role requires close cooperation with other staff members and aims to maximize the scientific impacts of ESA's missions while addressing major scientific challenges as outlined in the new ESA science strategy. The fellow will be part of the Earth System Science Hub, which focuses on developing innovative EO products and addressing significant science challenges of the decade, including the implementation of Digital Twin Earth, a high-resolution replica of our planet.
Duties and Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be responsible for advancing EO methods, algorithms, and products through advanced research activities that address major observational gaps and scientific priorities in EO. This includes conducting research on innovative topics related to new Earth Explorers and Sentinel expansion missions. The fellow will also contribute to enhancing the understanding of the Earth system by leveraging the latest EO technology to tackle major science challenges. Responsibilities include establishing a scientific basis for Digital Twin Earth, coordinating scientific exploitation projects, and engaging in thematic priorities such as data-driven Earth system simulations, hydrology and water cycle research, terrestrial carbon and ecosystems, polar science, and ocean science, particularly in the Mediterranean region.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must have a recently completed or near-completion PhD in a relevant technical or scientific discipline, with a preference for those who have completed their PhD within the last five years. A strong research background with peer-reviewed publications in relevant fields is essential. Additionally, candidates should possess practical knowledge of advanced EO data processing, particularly related to ESA and/or Copernicus missions, and have advanced programming skills, data analytics techniques, and experience in Earth system and climate modeling.
Educational Background: A PhD in physics, engineering, Earth system science, or climate science is required for this position. Candidates should have a solid foundation in research methodologies and a proven track record of publications in relevant scientific areas. The educational background should reflect a strong understanding of the principles and practices of Earth observation and climate science.
Experience: Candidates should have a demonstrated ability to conduct research autonomously and possess a breadth of exposure from past or current research activities. Experience in interfacing with the scientific community and international partners is crucial, as is the ability to gather and share relevant information effectively.
Languages: The working languages of the Agency are English and French, and a good knowledge of one of these languages is mandatory. Knowledge of another Member State language would be considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to collaborate in a multicultural environment.
