Job Posting Organization: UNICEF, established in 1946, is a United Nations agency responsible for providing humanitarian and developmental aid to children worldwide. The organization operates in over 190 countries and territories, with a mission to promote the rights of every child, everywhere, in everything it does. UNICEF focuses on equity, ensuring that all children, especially the most disadvantaged, have the opportunity to survive, develop, and reach their full potential. The organization emphasizes the importance of addressing inequity in health, education, and protection to foster sustainable growth and stability in nations.
Job Overview: The Online Volunteer position involves supporting UNICEF Mozambique’s Child Protection team in developing accessible and engaging materials for Child Protection in Emergencies (CPiE). The role requires strong graphic design and visual communication skills to redesign and simplify existing training materials for use in low-resource and emergency contexts. The volunteer will work closely with the Child Protection and Communications teams to ensure that the materials are practical, visually appealing, and aligned with UNICEF's branding and adult-learning methodologies. This position is crucial for enhancing the capacity of frontline responders and community actors in crisis-affected areas, particularly in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Online Volunteer will undertake a variety of tasks, including reviewing existing CPiE training materials to understand their content and intended use, supporting the visual redesign of the national CPiE Training of Trainers (ToT) package, and developing engaging materials tailored for emergency settings. Specific duties include proposing visual concepts and templates, creating or redesigning facilitator guides, training presentations, visual case study pamphlets, group work templates, infographics, and community-facing materials. The volunteer will ensure that all materials are accessible and practical for field use, incorporate feedback from technical teams, and comply with UNICEF's branding standards. Additionally, the volunteer will provide editable source files for future adaptations and create a visual guidance note for using the materials during trainings and emergency response activities.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess strong graphic design skills, with proficiency in design software such as Canva, PowerPoint, Adobe Illustrator, or InDesign. A solid understanding of visual communication principles and adult-learning methodologies is essential. The ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams and adapt materials for various audiences is also required. Experience in designing educational or training materials, particularly in humanitarian or emergency contexts, is highly desirable. Strong attention to detail and the ability to incorporate feedback effectively are critical for success in this role.
Educational Background: A background in graphic design, visual communication, education, or a related field is preferred. Candidates should have relevant coursework or training that demonstrates their design capabilities and understanding of effective communication strategies. A portfolio showcasing previous design work, particularly in educational or humanitarian contexts, will be beneficial.
Experience: While specific years of experience are not mandated, candidates should demonstrate a strong portfolio of graphic design work and familiarity with creating educational materials. Experience working in humanitarian settings or with organizations focused on child protection or education will be an advantage. The role is suitable for individuals looking to gain experience in a professional setting while contributing to meaningful projects that support children's rights and welfare.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, as all materials and communications will be conducted in this language. Knowledge of Portuguese or local languages spoken in Mozambique would be advantageous, as it may enhance the volunteer's ability to connect with local stakeholders and understand the cultural context of the materials being developed.
Additional Notes: This is a volunteer position, and while it may not offer financial compensation, it provides valuable experience working with a leading international organization. The role is expected to be flexible in terms of hours and can be conducted remotely, allowing for collaboration with the UNICEF Mozambique team from anywhere. The volunteer will have the opportunity to contribute to significant projects that enhance child protection efforts in emergency situations.
