Job Posting Organization: The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) was established to promote regional cooperation and sustainable development initiatives across Asia and the Pacific. The Subregional Office for East and North-East Asia (SOENEA) was inaugurated on May 17, 2010, in Sondgo, Incheon, Republic of Korea, following a UN General Assembly Resolution. SOENEA serves as a multilateral hub for six member countries: China, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Japan, Mongolia, Republic of Korea, and the Russian Federation. The office focuses on environmental cooperation and sustainable development, acting as the Secretariat for the North-East Asian Subregional Programme for Environmental Cooperation (NEASPEC).
Job Overview: The internship program at SOENEA is designed for individuals who are eager to gain practical experience in a UN environment. Interns will work full-time for a duration of three to six months, contributing to various projects that support regional cooperation and sustainable development initiatives. The role involves a range of tasks that require creativity and technical skills, particularly in visual communication and multimedia production. Interns will be supervised by a staff member and are expected to engage actively in the office's activities, enhancing their understanding of the UN's mission and operations.
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including but not limited to: designing and producing event flyers, posters, factsheets, infographics, and other visual communication materials; preparing PowerPoint presentations and other communication products; producing short promotional video clips and highlights from events; supporting the development of website and social media content; assisting with photography, video editing, and multimedia production; supporting branding and layout design in accordance with UN visual identity guidelines; and assisting in outreach and visibility activities related to meetings and regional forums. Additionally, interns may be assigned other related duties as needed, providing them with a comprehensive experience in the UN's operational framework.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following qualifications: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). This ensures that candidates possess the necessary academic background to contribute effectively to the internship.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this internship includes either a graduate degree or a bachelor's degree. Candidates should be currently enrolled in a relevant academic program or have recently completed their studies. This requirement is aimed at ensuring that interns have a solid foundation in areas pertinent to the work of the UN, such as international relations, environmental studies, communications, or related fields.
Experience: While specific prior experience is not mandated, candidates are expected to demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a willingness to learn. Any previous experience in communications, design, or multimedia production will be considered an asset, as it aligns with the responsibilities of the internship. Interns should be prepared to engage in a fast-paced environment and adapt to various tasks as needed.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of an additional official UN language, such as French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish, is considered an advantage and may enhance the candidate's application.
Additional Notes: This internship is unpaid, and interns are expected to cover their own costs related to travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the Republic of Korea may need to obtain the appropriate visa and work authorization. It is crucial for successful candidates to discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer. Furthermore, the United Nations does not charge any fees during the recruitment process, ensuring that the application process is free of financial burdens.
