Job Overview: The Online Volunteer position is focused on supporting UNICEF Algeria in the final quality assurance review of the 2025 Annual Report prior to its publication. The primary objective of this role is not to rewrite or redesign the document but to conduct a meticulous editorial and consistency review to ensure the report meets publication quality standards. The volunteer will be responsible for reviewing the English report and assisting the team in identifying and correcting various issues related to grammar, spelling, punctuation, typographical and formatting inconsistencies, sentence clarity, and readability. This role is crucial in ensuring that the report is polished and professional, reflecting UNICEF's commitment to quality and excellence in its communications.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties of the Online Volunteer include reviewing the English version of the Annual Report for the following:
Identifying and correcting grammar, spelling, and punctuation issues.
Spotting typographical and formatting inconsistencies throughout the document.
Enhancing sentence clarity and readability to ensure the report is accessible to its audience.
Detecting repetitions and broken or copied text that may detract from the report's professionalism.
Ensuring consistency in terminology and capitalization across the document.
Correcting any incorrect or inconsistent acronyms used in the report.
Addressing layout-related text issues such as broken words, duplicated sentences, and line breaks that may affect the document's presentation.
Ensuring adherence to UNICEF's terminology and style guidelines. The volunteer is expected to pay specific attention to the consistency of programme/program usage, titles, table of contents, numerical formatting, page references, captions, highlighted pull quotes, and the readability of highlighted text blocks. Additionally, consistency in partner names and institutional references must be maintained throughout the report.
Required Qualifications: The ideal candidate for this position should possess strong editorial skills, with a keen eye for detail and a thorough understanding of grammar, punctuation, and formatting standards. Familiarity with UNICEF's terminology and style is highly desirable. The volunteer should be able to work independently and efficiently, demonstrating excellent time management skills to meet deadlines. Strong communication skills are essential for providing feedback and collaborating with the team effectively. A background in editing, proofreading, or a related field is beneficial, as is experience in working with reports or publications.
Educational Background: While specific educational qualifications are not explicitly stated, a background in English, communications, journalism, or a related field would be advantageous for this position. Candidates should have a strong command of the English language, both written and verbal, to effectively carry out the review process.
Experience: Experience in editing, proofreading, or quality assurance roles is preferred for this position. Candidates should have a demonstrated ability to review documents for clarity, consistency, and quality. Previous experience working with non-profit organizations or in a similar context would be beneficial, particularly in understanding the nuances of organizational communications and reporting.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory for this position, as the report is in English and requires a thorough understanding of the language for effective review. Knowledge of additional languages, particularly French or Arabic, would be considered a plus, as it may enhance communication with diverse teams and stakeholders.
Additional Notes: The position is voluntary and does not specify a contract duration, but it is likely to be project-based, focusing on the completion of the 2025 Annual Report review. The role is remote, allowing volunteers to work from anywhere, which provides flexibility in managing their time. This opportunity is suitable for individuals looking to gain experience in editorial work within a reputable international organization, contributing to a meaningful cause.
