Established in 1975, ESA has grown to include 22 member states and employs over 2,200 staff members. The agency operates across multiple countries, focusing on various space missions, satellite launches, and international collaborations. ESA's mission is to provide Europe with a space capability and to foster cooperation among its member states in the field of space exploration and technology.
Job Overview: The Project Controller position is part of a Reserve list recruitment process initiated by ESA to address the ongoing demand for skilled professionals in project control for space projects. As a Project Controller, you will be integrated into the Directorate’s Business Unit Controlling Office, where you will collaborate with a team of controllers to deliver project control and management support services across various operational units. Your role will involve enhancing controlling and management processes, promoting digitalization, and ensuring effective management reporting. You will be responsible for interfacing with multiple entities both within ESA and externally, playing a crucial role in assisting managers with programmatic decision-making. This position requires a proactive approach to support project teams in implementing activities and managing projects effectively, ensuring that all aspects of project control are adhered to.
Duties and Responsibilities: As a Project Controller, your responsibilities will include: preparing and maintaining the overall programmatic aspects of projects in coordination with Project Managers, focusing on costs, schedules, workforce, risks, and geographical returns; implementing planning and control procedures to ensure visibility on project progress through established reporting systems; leading risk management and scheduling processes, identifying potential issues, proposing mitigation strategies, and preparing risk reports; preparing tender documents related to cost, management, risk, and schedule requirements, and participating in proposal evaluations; managing financial implementation, including commitments within delegated authority and acceptance of deliverables; participating in project reviews and ensuring all changes are formally verified and implemented; interfacing with industry on programmatic financial matters and advising on best practices; and driving continuous improvement in project control processes.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a master's degree in a relevant discipline and have at least four years of relevant professional experience. Professional experience as a controller, particularly in agency or industry settings, is highly desirable. Familiarity with space systems architecture and substantial experience in project management and risk management principles are considered assets. Candidates should also have experience in preparing, negotiating, and implementing major industrial procurements, as well as knowledge of European Commission projects, which would add value to the role.
Educational Background: A master's degree in a relevant field is mandatory for this position. This educational background should ideally encompass areas related to project management, finance, engineering, or business administration, equipping candidates with the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills required for effective project control.

Candidates should have a proven track record of applying project management and risk management principles effectively in previous roles, demonstrating their capability to handle complex projects and contribute to successful outcomes.
Languages: The working languages of ESA are English and French. A good command of one of these languages is mandatory, while knowledge of another language from a Member State would be considered an asset. This linguistic proficiency is essential for effective communication within the diverse international team at ESA.
Additional Notes: This position is part of a Reserve list recruitment process, meaning that candidates will be pre-assessed and pre-approved for future vacancies. Inclusion in the Reserve list does not guarantee recruitment but positions candidates as valuable resources for upcoming projects. The Reserve list will remain active for 24 months, during which candidates may be contacted for relevant opportunities. The role may involve working in various locations across Europe, and candidates should be prepared for potential travel. ESA is committed to diversity and inclusiveness in its workforce, welcoming applications from all qualified candidates regardless of gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religious beliefs, age, disability, or other characteristics.
