Job Overview:
The role of the Online Volunteer Translator is crucial in supporting the communication efforts of the UNOPS Multi-Country Office for West Africa. This position specifically focuses on translating video testimonies from the Peul language into French, which are derived from community members who have benefited from road construction and access projects in Conakry. The volunteers will be responsible for transcribing the videos, which are approximately 1 to 1.5 minutes long, and translating these transcriptions into French while ensuring that the time codes are accurately maintained for subtitling purposes. The deliverables must be provided in formats compatible with video editing software, such as SRT files, to facilitate the integration of subtitles into the videos. This role not only enhances the visibility of UNOPS projects but also amplifies the voices of the communities served, making it a vital part of the organization's outreach and impact narrative.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Transcribe the provided video content from Peul to text, ensuring accuracy and clarity in the transcription process.
  • Translate the transcriptions into French, maintaining the original meaning and context of the content.
  • Ensure that time codes are included in the translations for proper subtitling.
  • Deliver the final translated documents in the required format (e.g., SRT) that is compatible with Premiere Pro or other video editing software.
  • Adhere to the standards of translation and subtitling as set by UNOPS, ensuring high-quality outputs.
  • Collaborate with the UNOPS team to understand the context and objectives of the videos being translated.
  • Meet deadlines for the completion of translation tasks to ensure timely project delivery.

Required Qualifications:
  • Proficiency in both Peul and French languages, with strong written communication skills in both.
  • Experience in translation and transcription, particularly in the context of video content.
  • Familiarity with subtitling standards and practices.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively to meet deadlines.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work.
  • Previous experience in volunteer roles or with non-profit organizations is an advantage.

Educational Background:
A background in languages, translation, linguistics, or a related field is preferred. Formal education or training in translation practices is a plus, but not mandatory for volunteers with relevant experience.

Experience:
Previous experience in translation, particularly in audio or video content, is highly desirable. Familiarity with the cultural context of the Peul language and the communities involved in the projects is beneficial. Experience working with international organizations or in volunteer roles can enhance the candidate's profile.

Languages:
Mandatory: Proficiency in Peul and French. Good to have: Knowledge of English or other local languages may be advantageous but is not required for this position.

Additional Notes:
This is a volunteer position, and as such, it may not offer financial compensation. The role is expected to be part-time, with flexibility in hours to accommodate the volunteers' schedules. The duration of the volunteer engagement may vary based on project needs and the completion of translation tasks. Volunteers will be working remotely, allowing for international participation.
