Job Overview:
The Research Analyst position at the IMF Shanghai Center involves supporting the Center's management, economists, and visiting scholars in conducting research on macroeconomic and financial topics related to Asia. The role is integral to the Center's mission of building a comprehensive understanding of the Asia-Pacific region's economic landscape. The Research Analyst will participate in various research projects, engage in econometric analysis, and contribute to the production of papers and publications. Additionally, the position includes organizing research seminars and conferences, compiling and evaluating statistical data, and maintaining databases essential for the Center's research activities. The successful candidate will be expected to utilize their analytical skills to provide insights that inform policy decisions and academic discussions.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Research Analyst include:
  • Participating in research projects initiated by the Shanghai Center, contributing to the development of research papers and publications.
  • Conducting econometric analysis and analytical work to support the Center's research objectives.
  • Assisting in the organization of research seminars and conferences, ensuring effective communication and coordination among participants.
  • Compiling statistical data from various sources, comparing and evaluating the data for consistency and reliability.
  • Utilizing statistical and econometric techniques to evaluate data and derive meaningful insights.
  • Developing and maintaining comprehensive databases that are well-documented and accessible for research purposes.
  • Maintaining relevant computer software and writing, updating, modifying, and executing computer programs for statistical and econometric analysis.
  • Collaborating with other team members and stakeholders to ensure the successful execution of research initiatives and projects.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Master's degree in economics, finance, statistics, mathematics, computer science, data science, or a related quantitative field. Relevant work experience in econometrics, statistics, or finance is highly desirable. Proficiency in MS Excel and familiarity with analytical, statistical, and econometric software packages such as STATA, EViews, R, TSP, SPSS, Matlab, and SAS is essential. Experience working with financial and macroeconomic datasets is a plus, as well as the ability to utilize visual presentation tools like PowerPoint, MS Excel charts, Tableau, and database management tools such as Power BI, SQL, MS Access, and IBM Cognos BI. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively in a multi-national environment are also required.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for the Research Analyst position includes a Master's degree in a quantitative field such as economics, finance, statistics, mathematics, computer science, or data science. This advanced degree is critical as it provides the analytical foundation necessary for conducting high-level research and analysis in macroeconomic and financial topics relevant to the Asia-Pacific region.

Experience:
Candidates should have relevant work experience that demonstrates their ability to conduct econometric analysis and handle statistical data. Experience in research roles, particularly in economic or financial analysis, is advantageous. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of working with complex datasets and contributing to research projects, showcasing their analytical skills and ability to derive insights from data.

Languages:
Fluency in English, both written and orally, is mandatory for this position. The ability to communicate effectively in English is crucial for collaborating with international colleagues and presenting research findings. While not mandatory, proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset, particularly languages relevant to the Asia-Pacific region.

Additional Notes:
The employment conditions for the Research Analyst position include an initial appointment for one year, with the possibility of renewal. Research Analysts are expected to remain at the IMF Shanghai Center for no longer than four years. The compensation package is aligned with the United Nations National Officer A-Scale and is exempt from Chinese income tax. Benefits include health insurance, a cash allowance, and a lump sum payment at separation in lieu of a pension. The Center may assist with housing access in the Huangpu district, in collaboration with local authorities. Candidates must be nationals or residents of China or must independently obtain a valid work permit prior to employment. Proof of nationality, residency, and/or work authorization will be required before starting employment, and the Center will not sponsor or assist in obtaining work permits.
