Job Overview: The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position is based in the UNEP Communication Division at the Nairobi Duty Station. The primary purpose of this internship is to support communications activities related to significant events such as World Environment Day, Champions of the Earth, and Young Champions of the Earth. The intern will work under the general guidance of the Director of Communications and the direct supervision of the Communications Lead for Special Events. This role is designed to provide the intern with hands-on experience in communication strategies and practices within a global environmental context, contributing to the UNEP's mission of promoting sustainable development through sound environmental practices.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks that support the communication efforts of UNEP. These include: assisting in the development of communication materials such as meeting notes, email correspondence, draft background papers, social media content, and digital analyses; supporting coordination within the Division and across other departments on various projects and initiatives to ensure timely information flow and follow-up; managing partnerships related to key initiatives, including drafting meeting minutes, responding to partner inquiries, scheduling and coordinating meetings, conducting research and due diligence, updating and maintaining partner databases, and monitoring and compiling relevant data; supporting outreach activities for public advocacy campaigns and initiatives, which involves liaising with partners and stakeholders and assisting with follow-up communications; organizing and coordinating internal and external meetings and events, including agenda preparation, scheduling, and documentation; drafting wrap-up reports, briefings, and day-to-day communications related to campaign activities; providing administrative, project management, and information management support as needed; and carrying out other duties as required.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Preferred areas of study include Communication, International Affairs, or an environment-related field. No prior work experience is required, but a field of study closely related to the internship is necessary. Applicants must be a student in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. Programme.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this internship includes being enrolled in or having completed a graduate school programme or being in the final year of a first university degree programme. A minimum of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent is necessary, with preferred areas of study being Communication, International Affairs, or fields related to the environment. This educational requirement ensures that the intern has a foundational understanding of the topics and issues they will be working on during their internship.
Experience: The position does not require any prior professional work experience.
