Job Overview:
The Senior Protection Assistant (Arabic-speaking) position is crucial for supporting UNHCR's voluntary return monitoring activities in Türkiye. The incumbent will be part of the Adana Field Unit, where they will conduct voluntary return interviews, ensuring that individuals are informed of their rights and options in a language they understand. This role requires flexibility, as interviews may occur during day or night shifts, including weekends. The Senior Protection Assistant will also participate in case management, prepare case summaries, and contribute to protection reporting. The position demands strong interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and a solid understanding of protection principles and UNHCR's mandate, as the incumbent will interact with vulnerable populations and various stakeholders.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Senior Protection Assistant will be responsible for conducting voluntary return interviews to assess the voluntariness of returns and identify any protection risks. They will document the process in accordance with UNHCR standards and report outcomes promptly. The incumbent will participate in counselling sessions, prepare case summaries, and update the protection database. They will also assist in interpreting during field visits and provide translation of relevant documents to ensure accessibility of protection information. Additionally, the role may involve participation in protection activities such as trainings and inter-agency coordination meetings, requiring strong communication and organizational skills.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must have a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience with a high school diploma, or 1 year of relevant experience with a bachelor’s degree or higher. Proficiency in MS Office applications and relevant data entry systems is required. The position demands advanced problem-solving and analytical thinking skills, strong organizational capabilities, and the ability to handle confidential information under pressure. Familiarity with UNHCR protection standards and refugee law is also essential, along with a consistent and positive approach to work.

Educational Background:
A high school diploma is the minimum educational requirement for candidates with 2 years of relevant experience. For those with a bachelor’s degree or higher, only 1 year of relevant experience is required. The educational background should ideally include studies related to social sciences, international relations, or humanitarian assistance, which would provide a solid foundation for understanding the complexities of refugee protection and assistance.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience for candidates with a high school diploma, or 1 year of relevant experience for those with a bachelor’s degree or higher. Experience in protection work, refugee assistance, or related fields is highly desirable, as it equips candidates with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively support UNHCR's mission in Türkiye.

Languages:
The mandatory languages for this position are Arabic and English, with an excellent command required in both spoken and written forms. Additionally, knowledge of Turkish at a B2 level is required to effectively perform duties, particularly in discussions and negotiations with government officials and interactions with various stakeholders in protection contexts. Knowledge of other languages may be considered an asset but is not mandatory.

  • The contract duration is subject to operational needs and satisfactory performance, with no expectation of renewal beyond its expiry date. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, including mandatory night shifts and the possibility of work on weekends and official holidays. The role offers annual leave at the rate of two and a half working days per month, sick leave at the rate of two working days for each month of service, and medical coverage through Cigna Health Insurance. Candidates must comply with local legislation regarding taxation and work permits, and applications from non-Turkish candidates are subject to Ministry of Foreign Affairs clearance.
