Job Overview: The UN Volunteer position in the WASH sector is designed to support UNICEF's efforts in addressing the critical challenges faced by Ukraine's water, sanitation, and hygiene infrastructure. The role involves working under the direct supervision of the WASH Manager in Odesa, contributing to both emergency response and recovery projects in the water, sanitation, and heating sectors. The volunteer will be responsible for drafting updates for WASH situation analyses, preparing technical reports, and providing administrative support throughout the programming processes. This position requires a proactive approach to program development, ensuring that UNICEF's interventions are timely, relevant, and effective in meeting the needs of vulnerable populations, particularly children and families affected by the conflict. The volunteer will also engage in field visits, collect data, and collaborate with various stakeholders to enhance the implementation of WASH programs.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Programme Development and Planning: Draft updates for WASH situation analyses to inform the development of outcome and output results. Prepare technical reports and documentation, ensuring accuracy and relevance. Provide technical and administrative support throughout programming processes, including executing transactions and preparing materials for review and approval.
Technical and Operational Support: Conduct field visits and surveys, collecting and sharing reports with partners. Identify and report critical issues and bottlenecks to the supervisor. Offer technical support to government counterparts, NGOs, and other partners on UNICEF policies and best practices in WASH.
Humanitarian Preparedness and Response: Draft requisitions for supplies and services to ensure preparedness for emergencies. Understand UNICEF's emergency response procedures and take on support roles as needed during emergencies.
Collaboration: Work closely with various stakeholders, including government agencies and NGOs, to facilitate effective program implementation and ensure alignment with UNICEF's strategic objectives.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess strong analytical and communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. Proficiency in technical writing and report preparation is essential. Familiarity with WASH-related policies and practices is highly desirable. The ability to engage with diverse stakeholders, including government and non-governmental organizations, is crucial for success in this role. Candidates should also exhibit a commitment to UNICEF's mission and values, including professionalism, integrity, and respect for diversity.
Educational Background: A bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as public health, environmental science, social sciences, or a related discipline is required. Advanced degrees or specialized training in WASH or humanitarian response would be an asset. Candidates should have a solid understanding of the principles and practices related to water, sanitation, and hygiene, as well as the challenges faced in emergency and recovery contexts.
Experience: Candidates should have at least 1-2 years of relevant experience in program support, preferably in the WASH sector or related fields. Experience working in humanitarian contexts or with international organizations is highly valued. Familiarity with project management and monitoring and evaluation processes will be beneficial. The ability to adapt to changing circumstances and work effectively under pressure is essential for this role.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, both written and spoken. Proficiency in Ukrainian or Russian is highly desirable, as it will facilitate communication with local stakeholders and partners. Knowledge of additional languages may be considered an asset, depending on the specific needs of the program.
Additional Notes: This is a national UN Volunteer assignment, and the volunteer is responsible for organizing their own accommodation. The contract is full-time and may last for the duration indicated in the vacancy, with the possibility of extensions based on funding and performance. The monthly Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA) is USD 1270, which is intended to cover housing and living expenses. Additional benefits include a one-time entry lump sum payment of USD 400, medical and life insurance coverage, and various leave entitlements, including annual leave, learning leave, and sick leave.
