The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) was established in 1972 and has since become the global authority on environmental matters. Its mission is to provide leadership and foster partnerships in environmental stewardship, aiming to improve the quality of life for current and future generations. UNEP is headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, and operates through various divisions, regional offices, and a network of collaborating centers across multiple countries. The organization plays a crucial role in coordinating environmental policy development and promoting sustainable practices worldwide.

Job Overview:
The Online Volunteer position is designed for individuals with a background in desk research and a solid understanding of green and circular economy principles, particularly in relation to industry and value chains. The primary function of this role is to assist in identifying, classifying, and analyzing potential new technical knowledge partners who have expertise in green and circular economy practices. This involves conducting research to map out organizations operating at various levels in Africa, focusing on those that can contribute to the Green Growth Knowledge Partnership (GGKP). The role emphasizes the importance of collaboration and knowledge sharing among diverse stakeholders, including scientific centers, industry associations, NGOs, and community groups, particularly those representing youth, indigenous peoples, and women. The Online Volunteer will be tasked with producing knowledge resources in Swahili, which is essential for engaging local partners effectively.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Online Volunteer will undertake several key responsibilities, including:
  • Mapping: Conducting thorough research to identify between 10 and 30 potential new technical knowledge partners with credible experience in green and circular economy practices at regional, national, or local levels in Africa. This will involve using established criteria and guidance from the GGKP team.
  • Classification and Synthesis: Organizing the identified partners by type of organization, sectoral focus, and type of knowledge resources. This will require synthesizing the profiles of each entity in Swahili, ensuring clarity and accessibility of information.
  • Prioritization: Evaluating and identifying priority entities for engagement based on their influence and relevance in promoting green and circular economy practices. This will involve applying specific criteria established by the GGKP team.
  • Deliverables: Producing a detailed list of potential new technical knowledge partners in Excel format, including a short description of each entity, organized according to established categories. Additionally, a short recommendation report will be required, highlighting priority entities for potential engagement, also in Swahili. The Online Volunteer will gain valuable experience in strategic knowledge partnerships within the United Nations framework and contribute to the advancement of sustainable practices.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates for the Online Volunteer position should possess a strong background in desk research, particularly in the context of environmental issues and sustainable development. A good understanding of green and circular economy concepts is essential, as is the ability to communicate effectively in both English and Swahili. The ideal candidate should demonstrate analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to synthesize complex information into clear and concise formats. Familiarity with the UN system and experience in working with diverse stakeholders will be advantageous.

Educational Background:
A degree in environmental science, sustainable development, economics, or a related field is preferred. Candidates with relevant coursework or certifications in green and circular economy practices will be viewed favorably. Educational qualifications should reflect a commitment to understanding environmental issues and sustainable practices.

Experience:
While specific professional experience is not mandatory for this volunteer position, prior involvement in research projects, internships, or volunteer work related to environmental issues, sustainability, or community engagement will be beneficial. Experience in working with international organizations or NGOs will also be an asset, particularly if it involves collaboration with diverse groups.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the primary language of communication within the UN system. Proficiency in Swahili is also essential, as the role requires the production of knowledge resources in this language. Additional language skills may be considered an advantage, particularly if they relate to the regions of focus in Africa.

Additional Notes:
This is a volunteer position, and as such, it may not offer financial compensation. However, it provides an excellent opportunity for individuals looking to gain experience in international development and environmental policy. The role is expected to be part-time and can be conducted remotely, allowing for flexibility in working hours. The Online Volunteer will have the chance to contribute to meaningful projects that support sustainable development goals and engage with a network of professionals in the field.
