Job Overview: The GenAI Individual Consultant position is a pivotal role within UNHCR Iran, aimed at enhancing the organization's Helpline services through the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) solutions. The consultant will be responsible for piloting and validating AI-enabled tools that will improve communication with forcibly displaced persons (FDSPs). This role requires a strong understanding of AI applications, particularly in humanitarian contexts, and the ability to work collaboratively with various stakeholders to ensure that the solutions developed are effective, ethical, and compliant with data protection standards. The consultant will also be tasked with managing the project lifecycle, ensuring that all deliverables are met on time and to a high standard, while also providing guidance on monitoring and evaluation (M&E) frameworks specific to AI systems.
Duties and Responsibilities: The GenAI consultant will undertake a variety of responsibilities, including but not limited to: developing the Terms of Reference (ToR) for the Helpline AI project based on innovation submissions; managing the project to ensure high standards and adherence to deadlines; advising on monitoring and evaluation by identifying key indicators, milestones, and expected deliverables; ensuring that training data meets the necessary requirements for AI model operation; maintaining compliance with UNHCR data protection principles throughout the project; conducting regular meetings with the UNHCR Multi-Functional Team (MFT) and the implementing contractor; managing deviations with the implementing contractor and UNHCR; ensuring adherence to data governance protocols; and developing regular progress reports in line with the implementation timeline. The consultant will also focus on ensuring that the AI solutions are compatible with the existing UNHCR helpline infrastructure.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess strong coding capabilities in Python and SQL, particularly for data science and AI model development. They should have demonstrated experience in applying AI in humanitarian contexts, especially within the Iranian market. Knowledge of Natural Language Processing (NLP) in Farsi and/or Dari is essential, including experience with speech-to-text, text-to-speech, and conversational AI systems. Familiarity with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) techniques, ethical AI practices, and risk assessment strategies for AI systems is also required. Strong communication skills are necessary for engaging with both technical and non-technical audiences, and proven project management experience with established methodologies and tools is essential. Additionally, expertise in developing and applying M&E frameworks specific to AI systems is required.
Educational Background: The position requires a relevant educational background, typically at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, data science, artificial intelligence, or a related field. Advanced degrees or certifications in these areas may be preferred, particularly those that emphasize AI applications in humanitarian contexts.
Experience: Candidates must have a minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience in the field of artificial intelligence, data science, or a related area. This experience should include practical applications of AI in humanitarian settings, project management, and stakeholder engagement. Candidates with less than the specified years of experience will not be considered for short-listing or recommendations.
Languages: Proficiency in English and Farsi is mandatory, both written and spoken. Knowledge of Dari is also beneficial. The ability to communicate effectively in both languages is crucial for the role, given the target audience and the nature of the work.
Additional Notes: This position does not require a functional clearance and is not remote. It is a full-time role based in Tehran, Iran. The consultant will be expected to work closely with UNHCR staff and stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of AI solutions within the Helpline framework.
