Job Overview: The Cultural Mediator position is crucial for facilitating effective communication between IOM staff and beneficiaries, particularly Arabic and Farsi speakers. Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide interpretation and intercultural mediation for effective communication between IOM staff, reception and voluntary return officials, and beneficiaries during individual and group sessions.
Maintain professional confidentiality at all times.
Collaborate with reception and voluntary return authorities to assess and understand the interpretation needs of beneficiaries.
Offer insights to staff regarding the perceptions and experiences of beneficiaries to enhance service delivery.
Identify barriers that prevent beneficiaries from accessing available services and escalate sensitive issues through appropriate referral pathways.
Ensure that reception facilities are safe and protection-sensitive environments.
Assist in translating informational materials and documents for use in activities with beneficiaries.
Facilitate communication in a language understood by beneficiaries, ensuring objectivity and impartiality.
Undertake additional related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a high school degree or certificate, along with a minimum of two years of relevant work experience. A university degree from an accredited institution is considered an advantage. Candidates should demonstrate strong work ethics, a commitment to humanitarian principles, and the ability to work effectively in multicultural teams. Skills in problem-solving, self-motivation, and knowledge of the local context in Slovenia are essential. A valid driver's license with at least five years of driving experience is also advantageous.
Educational Background: The minimum educational requirement for this position is a high school diploma or equivalent, with at least two years of relevant work experience. A university degree from an accredited academic institution is preferred, particularly if it is related to social sciences, international relations, or a similar field. Accredited institutions are those recognized in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database.
Experience: Candidates should have previous work experience in a similar role, ideally within a multi-cultural environment. Experience assisting migrants and vulnerable groups is highly preferred, as is an understanding of the asylum and migration context in Slovenia. This experience will enable the Cultural Mediator to effectively support beneficiaries and navigate the complexities of their situations.
Languages: Fluency in Arabic or Farsi is required, along with proficiency in English or Slovenian. Candidates who possess knowledge of multiple required languages will be prioritized during the selection process. The IOM's official languages include English, French, and Spanish, and proficiency in these languages may also be beneficial.
