Job Overview:
The Information Technology Assistant position is crucial for the effective functioning of the IT Services Desk Team within the OHCHR. The incumbent will be responsible for a variety of IT support tasks, including desktop administration, service installation, and support, as well as logistics related to IT equipment. The role requires a proactive approach to troubleshooting and resolving IT issues, ensuring that all software and hardware are functioning optimally. The assistant will also be involved in monitoring software distributions, performing updates, and maintaining internal databases. This position demands a strong understanding of IT systems and the ability to provide technical support to users, ensuring that their needs are met efficiently and effectively. The role is designed for individuals who are not only technically skilled but also possess strong communication and interpersonal skills, as they will be interacting with various stakeholders within the organization.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Information Technology Assistant include:
  • Desktop Administration and Configuration: Monitoring OHCHR computers, performing software distribution updates, conducting research on new software versions, and providing second-level troubleshooting support.
  • Service Installation and Support: Logging problem calls, resolving service requests, diagnosing hardware and software issues, and providing basic training to end-users.
  • Logistics: Receiving and inspecting incoming assets, troubleshooting and repairing equipment, monitoring inventory levels, and recommending acquisitions to facilitate work.
  • Service Support: Logging service requests, creating work orders, liaising with other IT areas, and performing quality assurance procedures to ensure client satisfaction.
  • Physical Requirements: Lifting and moving equipment, working shifts as needed, and visiting user premises to resolve issues.
  • Other duties as required, including data collection and analysis, and updating information materials.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a high school diploma or equivalent. A minimum of five years of experience in IT support is required, with a reduction to three years for candidates holding a first-level university degree or higher. Experience in a UN environment is desirable. Candidates should demonstrate strong technical skills, particularly in Microsoft Windows and Office365 products, and show a commitment to professional development and gender equality in the workplace.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a high school diploma or equivalent. Candidates with a first-level university degree or higher may have their experience requirements reduced, indicating that higher education is valued in this role.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of five years of relevant experience in IT support. However, this requirement can be reduced to three years for candidates who possess a first-level university degree or higher. At least one year of experience in IT support within the United Nations system is preferred, highlighting the importance of familiarity with UN operations and standards.

Languages:
English is required for this position, with a minimum proficiency level of UN Level II in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. French is considered desirable, also requiring a minimum proficiency level of UN Level II. This bilingual requirement reflects the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat and emphasizes the need for effective communication in a multilingual environment.

Additional Notes:
This position is temporarily available for three months, with the possibility of extension, subject to the availability of funds. It is subject to local recruitment, meaning that applicants must be authorized to work in Switzerland. Selected candidates from outside the duty station will be responsible for their relocation expenses. The position does not offer allowances or benefits exclusive to international recruitment.
