The IMF has a diverse workforce of over 2,700 employees from various countries, operating in 190 member countries. The Shanghai Center is a new initiative aimed at enhancing the IMF's understanding of macroeconomic and financial issues in the Asia-Pacific region, serving as a bridge between academia and the IMF's headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Job Overview:
The position of Economist at the IMF Shanghai Center involves conducting research on macroeconomic and financial topics relevant to emerging markets and middle-income countries. The Economist will participate in collaborative research projects, engage with visiting scholars, and contribute to the development of the Center's outputs, including research papers and events aimed at policymakers and academics. The role requires a balance of independent research and teamwork, with opportunities to enhance publication records and engage with a diverse range of stakeholders in the academic and policy-making communities.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Economist will work under the supervision of the Director and Deputy Director of the IMF Shanghai Center. Key responsibilities include:
  • Participation in SH Center research projects, collaborating with visiting scholars and IMF economists, particularly from the Research Department and Asia and Pacific Department.
  • Conducting individual research to enhance personal publication records.
  • Organizing conferences, workshops, and seminars for academics and policymakers, often taking a leadership role in these events.
  • Collaborating with various institutions, including universities, think tanks, and central banks, to foster a rich exchange of ideas and research.
  • Undertaking additional organizational and administrative tasks as assigned by the Director or Deputy Director.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a recent PhD in economics or finance, ideally obtained within the last five years, with a demonstrated ability to conduct independent and collaborative research. PhD students in their final year are also encouraged to apply. A publication record is advantageous but not mandatory, particularly for those who have recently completed their PhDs. Strong references from reputable academics are highly valued, as is expertise in applied econometrics or modeling, especially general equilibrium models.

Educational Background:
A PhD in economics or finance is required for this position. Candidates who are in the final stages of their PhD program are also welcome to apply, indicating that the organization is open to nurturing emerging talent in the field.

Experience:
The ideal candidate should have a recent PhD and some experience in conducting research, either independently or as part of a team. While a publication record is beneficial, it is not a strict requirement, particularly for those who have recently completed their doctoral studies. The emphasis is on the ability to engage in rigorous economic research and contribute to the Center's objectives.

Languages:
Fluency in English, both written and spoken, is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in a second language, preferably an Asian language, is considered a plus, enhancing the candidate's ability to engage with diverse stakeholders in the region.

Additional Notes:
The position is initially offered for one year, with the possibility of renewal based on performance and organizational needs. The compensation package is aligned with the United Nations National Officer Scale and is exempt from Chinese income tax. Benefits include health insurance, a cash allowance, and a lump sum payment at separation in lieu of a pension. The SH Center is committed to diversity and encourages applications from candidates of all nationalities and backgrounds. For non-Chinese applicants, assistance with visa and work permits will be provided. The Center may also facilitate access to housing in the Huangpu district.
