Job Overview: The Communication Associate plays a vital role within the Communications Unit of UNDP Malawi, which is essential for enhancing public knowledge of development goals and aspirations. This position supports the implementation of internal communications activities, production of communication materials, management of digital platforms, and media engagement. The associate will work under the supervision of the Communication Analyst or designated representative, contributing to the overall communication strategy that aligns with UNDP's objectives in Malawi. The role involves compiling internal highlights, drafting stories and press releases, managing social media and website content, and organizing media events to increase engagement and visibility of UNDP's work.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Communication Associate will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
Supporting internal communications by compiling weekly highlights for the digital board to keep staff informed.
Assisting in the production of communication materials, including branded items, stories of change, press releases, blogs, and monthly highlights of UNDP Malawi's initiatives.
Managing UNDP Malawi's website and social media platforms by ensuring daily updates on Facebook and Twitter, monthly updates on the website, and regular uploads of new content on the YouTube channel.
Supporting media management by organizing media visits, facilitating breakfast meetings with media representatives, and ensuring coverage of UNDP in local media through daily monitoring and reporting.
Providing administrative support for communications by liaising with service providers for the delivery of communication products and assisting associates with payment processing for these services.
Required Qualifications: Candidates should possess strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to draft clear and engaging content. Proficiency in digital communication tools and social media management is essential. The ideal candidate should demonstrate creativity and innovation in communication strategies, as well as the ability to work collaboratively within a team. Familiarity with the development sector and understanding of UNDP's mission and objectives will be advantageous. Additionally, candidates should exhibit strong organizational skills and attention to detail, enabling them to manage multiple tasks effectively.
Educational Background: A bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field is required for this position. Advanced degrees or certifications in these areas may be considered an asset, providing a deeper understanding of communication strategies and practices relevant to the development sector.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in communications, public relations, or a related field. Experience working with international organizations, particularly in the context of development, is highly desirable. Familiarity with media relations and digital communication strategies will enhance a candidate's suitability for this role.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the primary language of communication within UNDP. Knowledge of local languages spoken in Malawi would be considered an asset, as it can enhance engagement with local communities and stakeholders.
Additional Notes: This position is a national UN Volunteer assignment, meaning that the selected candidate will be responsible for arranging their own housing and other living essentials.
