Job Overview:
The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position is designed for individuals who are interested in urban planning and design, particularly in the context of Mexico and Central America. Interns will work under the supervision of the Head of the Mexico, Cuba, and Central America Subregional Office, assisting in the definition and implementation of urban planning activities and outputs. The role emphasizes the development of urban planning and design projects, participatory workshops, and training sessions aimed at supporting municipalities and central governments in the SICA Region. Interns will also engage in research and produce actionable outputs related to urban planning, public space design, and climate change, contributing to the overall mission of UN-Habitat to promote sustainable urbanization.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including: assisting in the development of urban planning and design diagnoses, policies, strategies, and projects; supporting the Office in creating urban plans and conducting participatory workshops; developing concept notes and project proposals in areas such as urban resilience and climate change; creating informational materials and presentations; conducting research on urban planning and design topics; and following up on management issues with national and local counterparts in Mexico and the SICA Region. Additional duties may be assigned by the supervisor as needed.
Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), be in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent), or have graduated with a Bachelor's degree, Master's, PhD, or equivalent. Candidates should be computer literate in standard software applications, particularly Microsoft Office Suite. A keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a commitment to its ideals are essential. Candidates should also demonstrate the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs.
Educational Background:
Preferred areas of study include Urban Planning, Urban Studies, Urban Economy, Urban Legislation, Environmental Studies, Business Administration, Architecture, GIS, and Geography. Applicants should be pursuing or have attained an advanced degree in one of these fields. While professional work experience is not required for this internship, a field of study closely related to the internship is necessary. Candidates must be students in their final year of a first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master's, or Ph.D. program, or have completed such a program.
Experience:
While no professional work experience is required for this internship, candidates should have relevant academic experience in urban planning or related fields. The internship is designed for students or recent graduates who are looking to gain practical experience in urban development and planning within an international context.
Languages:
Fluency in oral and written Spanish is required for this internship position. English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat, and knowledge of another UN language is desirable. Familiarity with the urban context of Mexico and Central America is also preferred.
Additional Notes:
Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations, and they are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of Mexico may need to obtain the appropriate visa and work authorization.
