Job Overview:
The Climate Investment Associate will play a crucial role in the Department of Strategic Investment Partnerships and Co-Investments (DSCI) at GCF. This position involves independently performing operational, analytical, and coordination tasks across the investment cycle. The Associate will contribute to the development and execution of DSCI’s public and private sector portfolios, leading specific workstreams in project preparation, financial structuring, due diligence, portfolio monitoring, and investment pipeline development. The role requires a commitment to making a measurable difference in climate action initiatives and involves engaging with various stakeholders, including Accredited Entities (AEs) and internal teams. The Associate will also contribute to upstream advisory work, market intelligence, and knowledge creation to support DSCI’s strategic and investment priorities.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Climate Investment Associate will be responsible for a wide range of duties, including:
  • Independently analyzing concept notes, funding proposals, term sheets, financial models, and due diligence materials in alignment with GCF policies and the investment framework.
  • Leading analytical workstreams for low- to medium-complexity transactions, including structuring, negotiations, risk identification, and internal review processes.
  • Assessing strategic alignment, risks, barriers, and financial sustainability to prepare clear recommendations for decision-making.
  • Building and validating financial models and scenario analyses for structuring, pricing, tracking portfolio performance, and evaluating investment returns.
  • Providing technical input for the use of GCF financial instruments, including grants, loans, equity, and guarantees.
  • Maintaining, verifying, and interpreting quantitative and qualitative portfolio data to support performance monitoring and risk assessments.
  • Coordinating and tracking key project cycle activities, ensuring timely progression through internal and external review stages.
  • Leading preparation of portfolio dashboards, analytic summaries, and internal committee materials.
  • Acting as a primary coordination point with AEs, NDAs, DFIs, MDBs, and other partners for follow-up and documentation. 1
  • Conducting market and sector research to support pipeline development and strategic prioritization.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Master’s degree in Finance, Economics, Business Administration, Environmental Management, Development Finance, or a related field. Alternatively, a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline combined with an additional two years of relevant professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree. Additionally, candidates should have at least 5 years of relevant experience in investment analysis, climate finance, development finance, project finance, or portfolio management. Demonstrated experience with structuring or assessing investment instruments such as equity, debt, guarantees, and grants is essential. Advanced analytical skills, including financial modeling, risk analysis, and portfolio diagnostics, are required, along with strong coordination and project management abilities.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Master’s degree in a relevant field such as Finance, Economics, Business Administration, Environmental Management, or Development Finance. A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline, combined with additional professional experience, may also be accepted. The emphasis is on candidates who have a strong academic foundation in finance and investment analysis, as well as an understanding of climate finance and development issues.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in investment analysis, climate finance, development finance, project finance, or portfolio management. Candidates should have a proven track record of working with investment instruments and possess advanced analytical skills. Experience working in or with Development Finance Institutions (DFIs), Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs), investment funds, or climate finance institutions is preferred, indicating a familiarity with the complexities of climate finance and investment processes.

Languages:
Fluency in English is required for this position, as it is the primary working language at GCF. Knowledge of another UN language is considered an advantage, as it may facilitate communication with a broader range of stakeholders and partners in the international climate finance community.
