Job Overview:
The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position at UNCTAD's New York Office is designed to provide students or recent graduates with hands-on experience in the field of economic affairs. Interns will work under the supervision of senior staff members and are expected to contribute to various functions within the organization. This full-time, unpaid internship requires a commitment of five days a week for a duration of three months, starting in September 202
  • Interns will engage in activities such as monitoring UN meetings, assisting in the preparation of briefings, and supporting communication efforts. The role is intended to enhance the educational experience of interns while providing valuable insights into the workings of the United Nations and its impact on global trade and development.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
  • Monitoring and summarizing relevant meetings of the UN General Assembly and ECOSOC, as well as inter-agency dialogues.
  • Contributing to activities with UN system entities, including the ECOSOC Secretariat and the Department of Economic and Social Affairs.
  • Assisting in the preparation of briefings and meetings for UNCTAD staff.
  • Supporting the organization of meetings with representatives of Member States and other stakeholders.
  • Updating and improving information in NYO databases and conducting internet-based research.
  • Maintaining electronic communications and outreach products for stakeholders.
  • Preparing inputs for staff participating in intergovernmental processes.
  • Contributing to the implementation of the social media outreach strategy.
  • Observing all applicable UN rules and regulations, and ensuring that all materials prepared during the internship are provided to the receiving departments. 1
  • Upholding the impartiality and independence of the UN and refraining from any conduct that could adversely reflect on the organization.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet specific qualifications to be considered for the internship. They should either be enrolled in or have completed a graduate program (second university degree or equivalent) or be in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level). Additionally, interns should be computer literate in standard software applications and demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations. A personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter is essential, as is the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. While professional work experience is not required, a field of study closely related to the internship is necessary.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this internship includes enrollment in or completion of a graduate program or being in the final year of a bachelor's degree program. This internship is unpaid, and all costs related to travel, accommodation, medical insurance, and living expenses must be borne by the intern. Interns must have a valid visa to participate in the program, and those who are not citizens or permanent residents of the United States may need to obtain the appropriate work authorization. The internship is not expected to lead to employment within the UN, and interns are not eligible to apply for professional positions within the UN for six months following the completion of their internship.
