Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
UN Women was established in July 2010 as part of the UN reform agenda to enhance gender equality and the empowerment of women. It consolidates the efforts of four previously distinct parts of the UN system that focused on gender issues, namely DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW, and UNIFEM. UN Women operates globally, working to eliminate discrimination against women and girls, empower women, and achieve equality between women and men. The organization plays a pivotal role in facilitating civil society's participation in the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) and supports inclusive engagement across various levels, including global, regional, and national. UN Women is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive environment and operates in numerous countries worldwide, focusing on various aspects of gender equality and women's rights.

Job Overview:
The intern position at UN Women is designed to support the organization's efforts in engaging civil society organizations in the context of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW71). Under the guidance of the Advocacy and Partnership Specialist, the intern will assist in organizing inclusive consultations that involve diverse civil society groups, including women's rights organizations and youth-led movements. The role entails logistical arrangements, preparation of supporting documents, and coordination of meetings to ensure effective participation in CSW71 processes. The intern will also contribute to the implementation of the Civil Society Engagement Strategy, which includes outreach and stakeholder mapping, and will assist in facilitating civil society participation in both formal and informal CSW71 processes. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain insights into UN Women’s work related to global normative processes and public policies, as well as an understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced by civil society organizations working on gender issues.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
  • Supporting the organization of inclusive civil society consultations to inform CSW71 processes and outcomes, which involves logistical arrangements and preparation of necessary documents.
  • Assisting in the coordination of meetings with diverse civil society organizations, including grassroots groups and youth-led movements, to contribute to CSW71 preparatory processes.
  • Supporting the implementation of the Civil Society Engagement Strategy for CSW71, which includes outreach, stakeholder mapping, and coordination of inputs into key processes such as Expert Group Meetings and multistakeholder engagements.
  • Facilitating civil society participation in formal and informal CSW71 processes, including reviewing and uploading written statements on the CSW website and supporting advocacy efforts aligned with the priority theme.
  • Preparing background materials, summaries of civil society inputs, and knowledge products.
  • Drafting briefing notes and meeting records by integrating technical inputs and data visualizations based on ongoing engagement activities.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong understanding of gender equality, women's empowerment, and women's rights issues. They should demonstrate the ability to think logically and be detail-oriented. The role requires the ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment and familiarity with civil society organizations and international institutions. Strong writing skills are essential, as well as proficiency in using virtual meeting software (such as Zoom and Teams), the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and social media applications like Instagram and LinkedIn.

Educational Background:
Candidates must have university studies in relevant disciplines such as communications, human rights, gender studies, political or social sciences, law, public relations, journalism, public administration, or conference and event management. They must meet one of the following criteria: be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); be in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level); have graduated with a university degree within the last two years; or be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program that is part of a degree program and undertake the internship as part of the program requirements.

Experience:
The internship is designed for individuals who are either currently enrolled in a relevant academic program or have recently graduated. While specific prior experience is not mandated, familiarity with civil society organizations and issues related to gender equality will be beneficial. The intern should be prepared to engage with various stakeholders and contribute to discussions on gender issues.

Languages:
Excellent communication skills in English, both written and oral, are required for this position. A working knowledge of another UN language is considered an advantage, as it may enhance the intern's ability to engage with a broader range of stakeholders and resources.

Additional Notes:

All applicants must submit a completed and signed P.11 form with their application. Due to the high volume of applications, only successful candidates will be contacted.
