Job Overview: The Gender Affairs Officer will play a crucial role in supporting an integrated approach to the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda within the Peacebuilding and Peace Support Office (PBPSO). This position involves providing strategic and technical advice on gender equality, coordinating with the PBPSO Gender Advisor, and leading initiatives related to justice and security. The officer will analyze policy and political trends, attend senior management meetings, and deploy to support gender-responsive reforms at the country level. The role also includes creating policy tools for data analysis, managing donor relations, and supporting the development of peacebuilding projects. The officer will be expected to draft various documents and provide substantive support for meetings and conferences, ensuring that gender perspectives are integrated into all areas of work.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Gender Affairs Officer will be responsible for a wide range of duties, including:
Providing strategic and technical advice on gender equality and WPS to PBPSO.
Coordinating with the PBPSO Gender Advisor to develop and implement strategies for advancing gender equality.
Leading the WPS Facility for justice and security, managing staff and ensuring alignment with program timelines.
Analyzing policy and political events related to gender equality in justice and security.
Briefing senior management on WPS developments and identifying integration points for gender in ongoing initiatives.
Supporting gender-responsive reforms at the country level and sharing lessons learned.
Creating policy tools for data collection and analysis on gender equality impacts.
Acting as a liaison for donor relations and managing budget activities.
Supporting the development of peacebuilding projects and preparing policy guidance. 1
Convening technical focal points to advise on WPS issues. 1
Drafting notes, background papers, and other correspondence for senior UN officials. 1
Providing support for meetings and conferences, including agenda proposals and document preparation. 1
Coordinating with relevant UN entities as needed.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong understanding of gender equality and the UN's role in promoting it, particularly in the context of rule of law and security institutions. They should demonstrate the ability to analyze issues, conduct independent research, and manage conflicting priorities. Professionalism, planning and organizing skills, teamwork, and effective communication are essential competencies for this role. The officer must show a commitment to incorporating gender perspectives in all work areas and ensuring equal participation of women and men.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, gender studies, law, public administration, or a related field is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
Experience: A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in areas such as gender, rule of law, disarmament, security sector reform, political affairs, or international relations is required. Additionally, at least five years of experience providing technical advice in rule of law and security institutions, with specialized expertise in gender-responsive approaches, is necessary. Experience working in a UN peace operation and in project management, financial reporting, and donor liaison is also required.
Languages: English is required for this position, with a minimum proficiency level of UN Level III in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. French is also a working language of the United Nations, but proficiency in French is not mandatory for this role.
