Job Overview:
The Statistical Assistant position is situated within the Statistical Development, Data Innovation, and Outreach Section of the African Centre for Statistics at ECA. The role involves collecting, evaluating, processing, and analyzing statistical data from various sources using modern technology. The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring the internal consistency of data, reconciling discrepancies, and preparing outputs such as charts and graphs for reporting purposes. The Statistical Assistant will also maintain computerized databases, respond to internal and external inquiries, and assist in liaising with other UN organizations to gather necessary statistical information. This position requires a proactive approach to Data Management and the ability to work collaboratively within a team to achieve organizational goals.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Statistical Assistant will undertake a variety of responsibilities, including:
- Collecting, evaluating, processing, and analyzing statistical data from diverse sources.
- Ensuring the internal consistency of data and reconciling discrepancies in data series.
- Building specialized data sets tailored to specific research needs or reports.
- Preparing visual outputs such as charts and graphs for effective data presentation.
- Applying and executing programming for specific statistical applications based on provided specifications.
- Maintaining relevant computerized databases to ensure data integrity and accessibility.
- Responding to internal and external requests regarding specific programs and statistical data.
- Assisting in communication with other UN organizations to obtain necessary statistical information.
- Preparing data sets upon request and maintaining/updating web pages related to statistical data. 1
- Supervising and guiding general service staff as needed. 1
- Performing additional duties as assigned by the Director or Chief of the Section.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a high school diploma or equivalent. A certificate or higher qualification in Data Science or technology is considered an advantage. The role requires a strong understanding of statistical methods and data Analysis techniques, as well as proficiency in using modern technology for Data Processing and evaluation. Candidates should demonstrate professionalism, teamwork, and technological awareness, with the ability to adapt to new technologies and methodologies as required.
Educational Background:
The minimum educational requirement for this position is a high school diploma or equivalent. However, candidates with additional qualifications such as a certificate or degree in data science, statistics, or a related field will be viewed favorably. This educational background is essential for understanding the complexities of statistical data and for effectively utilizing technology in data management.
Experience:
A minimum of ten (10) years of experience in statistics, data science, or related fields is required for this position. Candidates should have substantial experience in Data Collection, analysis, and management, with a focus on statistical methodologies. Experience in database Design and management is also desirable, as it will enhance the candidate's ability to maintain and utilize computerized databases effectively.
Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of French is desirable, and proficiency in another official United Nations language is considered an advantage. This linguistic capability is crucial for effective communication within the organization and with external stakeholders.

This position is subject to local recruitment, meaning that applicants must be authorized to work for the United Nations in the duty station of Addis Ababa. Candidates selected from outside the duty station will be responsible for their relocation expenses.
