Job Overview:
The Social Development Associate will play a crucial role in integrating social development dimensions into the operational work of AIIB, emphasizing the significance of social issues in the development of sustainable infrastructure. This position involves a variety of activities aimed at addressing the social aspects of policies, programs, projects, technical assistance, and training. The associate will also manage social risks and impacts associated with investment projects, ensuring compliance with AIIB's Environmental and Social Policy (ESP). The role requires active participation in the formulation and implementation of social Development Strategies, as well as the evaluation of social impact assessments for investment programs and projects. The associate will support the preparation of Social Impact Assessment Reports and Resettlement Plans across priority sectors such as water, energy, and transport, thereby contributing to the overall mission of AIIB in promoting sustainable development.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Social Development Associate will be responsible for a comprehensive set of duties, including but not limited to: supporting the formulation and implementation of social development aspects of AIIB’s strategies, policies, programs, and projects; participating in the identification, appraisal, Design, and implementation of investment programs and projects to evaluate social impact assessments; preparing Social Impact Assessment Reports and Resettlement Plans for projects in priority sectors; assisting clients in designing and implementing social assessments of plans and frameworks; managing social risks and impacts of investment projects through conducting social reviews and compliance studies; monitoring environmental and social aspects in projects under implementation; developing and monitoring action plans to address client compliance issues; coordinating the application of disclosure and consultation processes for environmental and social assessments; contributing to the development of AIIB’s approach to gender, labor, disability, and emerging ESG frameworks; coordinating project-level grievance resolution mechanisms; and supporting the development of training on social safeguard systems for AIIB staff and clients.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree in social science, environmental or natural science, engineering, planning, Community Development, Law, or a related discipline. Additionally, a minimum of 4-5 years of relevant professional experience in environmental and social planning and management is required. This experience can be gained through work with a multilateral development bank (MDB), bilateral donor, or private sector organization. Proven expertise in planning and managing the environmental and social aspects of infrastructure programs and projects is essential, particularly in sectors such as energy, transport, water, and urban development. Candidates should also have demonstrated experience in preparing Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIAs) and Environmental and Social Management Plans (ESMPs).
Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Bachelor's degree in relevant fields such as social science, environmental or natural science, engineering, planning, community development, law, or a related discipline. This foundational education is critical for understanding the complexities of social development and Environmental Management within the context of infrastructure projects.
Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 4-5 years of relevant professional experience. This experience should encompass environmental and social planning and management, ideally within the context of a multilateral development bank (MDB), bilateral donor, or private sector organization. Candidates should have a proven track record in the application of professional expertise in managing the environmental and social aspects of infrastructure programs and projects, including experience in monitoring E&S aspects for projects under implementation.
Languages:
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English are mandatory for this position. Knowledge of the language(s) of a country in which AIIB invests would be considered an advantage, as it would facilitate better communication and understanding of local contexts and stakeholders.
