Job Overview:
The (Senior) Environmental/Social Development Specialist – OHS will play a crucial role in integrating environmental and social dimensions into AIIB's operations, particularly focusing on occupational health and safety (OHS) requirements. This position is essential for ensuring that AIIB's financed projects adhere to environmental and social governance standards. The specialist will be involved in various activities, including addressing environmental and social dimensions of policies, programs, and projects, managing environmental and social risks, and ensuring compliance with AIIB's Environmental and Social Policy (ESP). The role requires collaboration with clients and stakeholders to enhance the sustainability of infrastructure projects and to ensure that OHS risks are effectively managed throughout the project lifecycle.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the (Senior) Environmental/Social Development Specialist – OHS include:
  • Participating in the identification, appraisal, Design, and implementation of investment programs and projects to evaluate environmental and Social Sustainability.
  • Managing environmental and social risks and impacts associated with investment projects, including Sovereign-backed and Non-sovereign-backed Financings.
  • Conducting screenings for potential environmental and social risks and impacts, particularly related to occupational health and safety.
  • Guiding clients in preparing and implementing environmental and social impact assessments (ESIAs) and environmental/social management plans (ESMPs).
  • Monitoring the implementation of environmental and social aspects of projects and addressing any arising issues.
  • Conducting reviews of relevant environmental/social laws and regulations to determine their applicability in AIIB-financed projects.
  • Contributing to AIIB's knowledge base on environmental and social aspects, particularly related to OHS and Emergency preparedness.
  • Developing and conducting training on environmental and social sustainability for AIIB staff, consultants, and clients.
  • Leading operations as the OHS Focal Point and Expert within the Sustainability and Fiduciary Solutions Department.

Required Qualifications:
The required qualifications for the (Senior) Environmental/Social Development Specialist – OHS include:
  • Proven ability to carry out complex tasks as part of multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Capacity to work under pressure to meet strict deadlines.
  • Advanced degree (Masters or PhD) in occupational health, industrial safety, environmental science, social science, engineering, planning, Community Development, law, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 5-8 years of relevant professional experience in environmental and social due diligence, environmental planning, and management.
  • Expertise in occupational health and safety, hazard identification, and Emergency Preparedness.
  • Experience in conducting environmental and social assessments and related studies.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess an advanced degree (Masters or PhD) in a relevant field such as occupational health, industrial safety, environmental science, social science, engineering, planning, community development, law, or a related discipline. This educational background is essential for understanding the complexities of environmental and social governance in infrastructure projects.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of 5-8 years of relevant professional experience, particularly in working on environmental and social due diligence, environmental planning, and management. Experience working with multilateral Development Banks, bilateral donors, or private sector organizations is highly desirable. Proven expertise in occupational health and safety, hazard identification, and emergency preparedness is also required, preferably in the context of international EHS standards.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the primary language of communication within AIIB. Knowledge of additional languages relevant to the countries where AIIB invests would be considered an advantage, enhancing the ability to engage with local stakeholders and clients effectively.
