Job Overview:
The Natural Resource Management Adviser plays a crucial role in providing strategic technical advisory, policy, and research direction to the Land Resources Division (LRD) and member countries on sustainable forest and landscape management practices. This position emphasizes the importance of Ecosystem Services and aligns with national and regional priorities. The adviser will lead resource mobilization efforts, coordinate multidisciplinary grant proposals, and engage with stakeholders to enhance sustainable forestry and landscape management initiatives. Additionally, the adviser will contribute to policy formulation, provide expert technical advice, and facilitate regional technical meetings to promote sustainable practices. The role also involves monitoring and evaluating forestry initiatives, ensuring compliance with regulations, and managing budgets and resources effectively.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead resource mobilization efforts by coordinating Fundraising for projects and developing strategic partnerships with regional and international organizations.
- Develop and coordinate multidisciplinary grant proposals in collaboration with program leaders and technical staff.
- Coordinate stakeholder engagements and foster partnerships to enhance sustainable forestry and landscape management.
- Formulate policy advice supporting sustainable forestry and land use management practices.
- Provide strategic technical advice to member countries and stakeholders on forestry and land use management.
- Lead research planning, Design, and monitoring to address critical issues in sustainable forestry.
- Coordinate regional technical meetings to progress forestry and landscape management activities.
- Facilitate a regional network of forestry professionals.
- Disseminate knowledge regarding research findings and best practices in sustainable forestry. 1
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of forestry initiatives and manage project budgets and resources.
Required Qualifications:
- A degree in natural resources management, forestry science, or Agricultural Economics.
- At least 10 years of demonstrated experience in a similar role.
- Expertise in research and implementation of interventions in forestry and natural resources management.
- Understanding of national and regional forestry issues.
- Demonstrated capability in policy formulation and implementation.
- Experience in monitoring and evaluating sustainable forestry management.
- Proficiency in computational and statistical tools for forestry Information Management.
- Proven ability to publish in international peer-reviewed journals.
- Experience in fundraising, proposal preparation, and project management.
Educational Background:
Candidates must possess a degree in natural resources management, forestry science, or agricultural economics. This educational background is essential to ensure that the adviser has the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills to address the complexities of natural resource management in the Pacific context.
Experience:
The position requires at least 10 years of relevant experience in natural resource management, specifically in forestry and landscape management. This level of experience is crucial for the adviser to effectively lead initiatives, provide expert advice, and engage with various stakeholders in the region.
Languages:
Excellent English communication skills, both oral and written, are mandatory for this position. A working knowledge of French is considered an advantage, reflecting the bilingual nature of SPC's operations and the need to engage with diverse stakeholders across the Pacific region.
Additional Notes:
The contract duration for this position is until 30 November 2027, subject to renewal based on funding and performance. The Natural Resource Management Adviser is classified as a band 11 position in SPC’s 2024 salary scale, with a starting salary range of 3,091‒3,864 SDR per month, approximately converting to FJD 9,211–11,51
- Expatriate staff members are not subject to income tax in Fiji, while Fiji nationals will be.
