The CTBT aims to ban all nuclear weapon test explosions and any other nuclear explosions. The organization operates a network of 337 facilities worldwide, including an international data center and on-site inspections to monitor compliance with the treaty. Job Overview:
The Linux/Unix Support Technician position is situated within the Systems Applications and Web Unit of the Automatic Processing Systems Section in the International Data Centre Division (IDC). The role is crucial for providing Technical Support to the organization's LINUX/UNIX systems, ensuring the smooth operation of servers and workstations. The technician will be responsible for the installation, configuration, and maintenance of various systems, as well as troubleshooting and resolving incidents related to Operating Systems and storage. The position requires a proactive approach to managing workloads and improving service delivery to end users, while also participating in hardware and software migration projects and other ad hoc tasks as assigned. The technician will work under the supervision of the Chief of the Automatic Processing Systems Section and is expected to adhere to the CTBTO's values of integrity, professionalism, and respect for diversity.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Linux/Unix Support Technician include:
- Providing support for LINUX/UNIX systems, including installation, configuration, deployment, and maintenance of mass storage systems, servers, and workstations.
- Diagnosing and troubleshooting issues related to operating systems, storage, and LDAP servers.
- Managing system incidents and requests, ensuring timely resolution and proper logging of tickets.
- Assisting with hardware and software migration projects and monitoring software licenses used by end users.
- Prioritizing and managing own workload with minimal supervision to enhance the efficiency of LINUX/UNIX support services.
- Performing other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess at least five years of relevant working experience with Enterprise Linux systems, including clustering and virtualization technologies such as VMware, Oracle, and RedHat. Proven experience as a Linux/Unix Support Technician or in similar roles is essential. Candidates should have a strong understanding of web components like Apache, Tomcat, and LDAP servers, as well as knowledge of service desk procedures, incident/problem management, and Service Management. Strong customer orientation and the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical staff in a multicultural environment are also required. Excellent problem-solving and communication skills are essential for this role.
Educational Background:
The position requires completed secondary education along with training in a field related to network systems and/or computer technical support. This educational background is crucial for understanding the technical aspects of the role and for effectively supporting the organization's systems.
Experience:
The ideal candidate should have a minimum of five years of relevant experience in the field, specifically with Enterprise Linux systems and related technologies. Experience in roles such as Linux/Unix Support Technician, IT Help Desk Technician, or Cloud Services Administrator is highly desirable. This level of experience ensures that the candidate is well-equipped to handle the responsibilities of the position and can contribute effectively to the team.
Languages:
Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are mandatory for this position. Knowledge of other official CTBTO languages, including Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish, is considered desirable and would be an asset in a multicultural work environment.

This position is a fixed-term appointment and is for local recruitment only. Candidates must hold a valid residence and work permit in Austria to be eligible for consideration. The CTBTO offers an attractive compensation and benefits package in accordance with the policies of the International Civil Service Commission. The salary may be subject to deductions for the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund and/or Health Insurance Scheme.
