Job Posting Organization:
The European Space Agency (ESA) is an intergovernmental organization dedicated to the exploration of space. Established in 1975, ESA has grown to encompass 22 member states and employs over 2,200 staff members. The agency's mission is to shape the development of Europe's space capability and ensure that investment in space continues to deliver benefits to the citizens of Europe and the world. ESA operates across various domains, including Earth observation, human spaceflight, exploration, and telecommunications, and has established a significant presence in international collaborations and partnerships.

Job Overview:
This Internship opportunity is situated within the Directorate of Earth Observation Programmes at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in Noordwijk, Netherlands. The intern will work under the guidance of the Director of Earth Observation Programmes and the Head of the Projects Department. The primary focus of this role is to assist in the simulation and correction of stray light for the CO2M polarimeter instrument, which is crucial for monitoring anthropogenic CO2 emissions from space. The intern will engage in optical modeling, Data Processing, and collaboration with engineers to enhance the performance of the Multi Angle Polarimeter (MAP) instrument. This role is designed for university students who are eager to gain hands-on experience in a cutting-edge space mission and contribute to significant environmental monitoring efforts.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for familiarizing themselves with the optical Design of the MAP instrument's focal plane and consolidating an optical model to simulate imagery. They will compare simulated results with previously measured images under various conditions, process large datasets to support modeling efforts, and apply statistical methods to analyze pixel behavior. The intern will collaborate closely with the MAP instrument Engineer and other technical staff to develop a correction for stray light, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of the instrument's measurements. Additionally, the intern will participate in team meetings, contribute to project documentation, and present findings to the team.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must be university students, preferably in their final or second-to-last year of a Master's level course. A strong understanding of optical systems and experience with data Analysis are essential. Proficiency in Matlab or Python is required, and familiarity with optical simulation software such as Zemax, CodeV, or Fred is considered an asset. The candidate should demonstrate strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

Educational Background:
The ideal candidate should be pursuing a degree in a relevant field such as physics, engineering, or a related discipline, with a focus on optics or instrumentation. The candidate must remain enrolled at their university for the entire duration of the internship, ensuring that they can apply theoretical knowledge in a practical setting.

Experience:
While prior internship experience is not mandatory, any relevant experience in optical engineering, Data Analysis, or programming will be advantageous. The candidate should demonstrate a keen interest in space missions and environmental monitoring, showcasing their motivation to contribute to the CO2M mission.

Languages:
The working languages of the European Space Agency are English and French. A good command of one of these languages is required, while knowledge of an additional language from a Member State would be beneficial. This multilingual environment emphasizes the importance of effective communication within the diverse workforce.

Additional Notes:
This internship is a full-time position, and candidates must be eligible to access technology and hardware subject to European and US export control regulations. ESA is committed to diversity and inclusion, encouraging applications from all qualified candidates, particularly women and individuals with disabilities. The agency provides necessary support for individuals with disabilities and ensures a fair recruitment process. Applications are only accepted from nationals of specific European countries and associated states, emphasizing the agency's commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive workforce.
