Job Overview: The Consultant Climate Risk Insurance position is designed to provide expert guidance and support in the development and implementation of climate risk insurance solutions in the Bougainville and Highlands regions of Papua New Guinea. The consultant will be responsible for assessing the current climate risks faced by local communities and identifying appropriate insurance mechanisms to mitigate these risks. This role requires a deep understanding of climate change impacts, insurance products, and the socio-economic context of the regions involved. The consultant will work closely with local stakeholders, including government agencies, community organizations, and private sector partners, to design and implement effective climate risk insurance strategies that enhance resilience and promote sustainable development. The position also involves conducting research, facilitating workshops, and providing training to local stakeholders on climate risk management and insurance practices.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Conduct comprehensive assessments of climate risks in the Bougainville and Highlands regions, including identifying vulnerable communities and sectors.
Develop tailored climate risk insurance products that meet the specific needs of local populations.
Collaborate with local stakeholders to design and implement pilot projects for climate risk insurance.
Facilitate workshops and training sessions to educate stakeholders on climate risk management and insurance solutions.
Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of implemented insurance products and strategies, providing recommendations for improvement.
Prepare detailed reports and presentations on findings, progress, and recommendations for stakeholders and funding agencies.
Engage with national and international partners to promote knowledge sharing and best practices in climate risk insurance.
Required Qualifications: The ideal candidate should possess a strong background in climate science, risk management, and insurance. A proven track record of working on climate-related projects, particularly in developing countries, is essential. The consultant should have excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to communicate complex concepts to diverse audiences. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with various stakeholders are crucial. Familiarity with the socio-economic context of Papua New Guinea and experience in capacity building and training are highly desirable.
Educational Background: A master's degree in environmental science, climate change, risk management, finance, or a related field is required. Additional certifications or training in insurance, disaster risk reduction, or sustainable development will be considered an asset.
Experience: A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in climate risk assessment, insurance, or related fields is required. Experience working in Papua New Guinea or similar contexts is highly desirable. Proven experience in project management and stakeholder engagement is essential.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, both written and spoken. Knowledge of local languages spoken in Papua New Guinea would be an advantage, as it would facilitate better communication with local communities and stakeholders.
Additional Notes: This position is offered as an individual contractor role, with a contract duration that will be specified upon selection. The consultant is expected to work full-time on this assignment, with flexibility in working hours to accommodate local stakeholders.
