The job posting organization is the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), which is a global development network advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience, and resources to help people build a better life. Established in 1965, UNDP operates in about 170 countries and territories, working to eradicate poverty and reduce inequalities through sustainable development. The organization focuses on various areas including democratic governance, peacebuilding, climate change, and disaster resilience, and aims to empower lives and build resilient nations.

Job Overview:
The position of Consultant for the Acquisition of Photographic and Video Services is crucial for the UNDP's communication efforts, particularly in enhancing the visibility and impact of the UN Volunteer (VNU) program. The consultant will be responsible for capturing high-quality photographic and video content that showcases the contributions of UN Volunteers to development initiatives. This role requires a creative individual who can effectively document the activities of volunteers in various settings, ensuring that the essence of their work and the communities they serve is accurately represented. The consultant will work under the supervision of the communication associate responsible for visual assets, and will be expected to deliver a minimum of 25 publishable photographs per day, adhering to professional standards of quality and resolution. The photographs must not only depict the volunteers in action but also highlight the environment and context in which they operate, thereby telling a compelling story through imagery.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will have several key responsibilities, including but not limited to:
  • Providing high-resolution digital photographs, with a commitment to deliver at least 25 publishable images per day.
  • Ensuring that all photographs are taken using professional-grade equipment and are suitable for high-resolution printing.
  • Delivering images electronically within five business days of the shoot, in formats such as RAW or JPEG, with specifications for resolution and quality.
  • Capturing images of UN Volunteers interacting with communities, ensuring a variety of shots including vertical and horizontal formats, close-ups, and group shots.
  • Avoiding posed photographs and instead focusing on candid moments that reflect the volunteers' engagement and activities.
  • Including clear branding elements of the VNU program in the photographs, such as clothing or promotional materials.
  • Providing detailed captions in English for each photograph, including metadata that specifies the date, location, subjects, job titles, and a brief description of the activities depicted.
  • Collaborating with the communication team to ensure that the visual content aligns with the overall messaging and objectives of the UNDP.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong background in photography and videography, with proven experience in capturing high-quality images in various settings. A deep understanding of visual storytelling and the ability to convey messages through imagery is essential. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate proficiency in photo editing software and have a portfolio that showcases their work. Strong communication skills are necessary to collaborate effectively with the UNDP team and to understand the specific requirements of each assignment. Familiarity with the UN system and its values, particularly regarding volunteerism and development, will be considered an asset.

Educational Background:
A degree in photography, visual arts, communications, or a related field is preferred. Candidates with equivalent professional experience and a strong portfolio may also be considered. Continuous professional development in photography and videography techniques is highly valued, as is any formal training in visual communication or media production.

Experience:
The ideal candidate should have a minimum of 3-5 years of professional experience in photography and videography, particularly in a development or humanitarian context. Experience working with international organizations or NGOs is highly desirable, as it demonstrates an understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities in capturing visual content for development purposes. A track record of producing high-quality visual content that has been published or used in campaigns will strengthen the application.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as all captions and communications will be conducted in this language. Proficiency in French is highly desirable, given the context of the work in Gabon and the need to communicate effectively with local stakeholders and communities. Knowledge of additional languages relevant to the region may also be beneficial.

Additional Notes:
The contract for this position is for a duration of 3 months, with the work location specified as the Ramsar Site, Waka National Park, and Nyanga Base. The mission period is set from June 8 to June 15, 202
  • Candidates are required to submit their proposals directly through the UNDP supplier portal by the deadline of May 25, 202
  • It is important to note that any requests for clarification must be submitted in writing via the portal's messaging feature, and the UNDP will respond without disclosing the identity of the inquirer. This position is classified as an individual contractor role, and candidates should ensure they have registered on the UNDP supplier portal prior to submission.
