Job Overview:
The Assistant Communication Officer plays a crucial role within UNICEF's Communication and Advocacy portfolio, specifically in the Jamaica Country Office. This position is designed to enhance the capacity of the small communication team by providing creative, technical, and operational support. The officer will be responsible for developing and implementing communication and advocacy initiatives that ensure effective outreach and engagement across various platforms. The role involves creating high-quality visual and written content, managing social media presence, coordinating events, and supporting emergency communication efforts. The Assistant Communication Officer will work collaboratively with the communications team to translate key messages into engaging formats, thereby increasing public awareness of UNICEF's initiatives and enhancing visibility.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Graphic Design and Visual Content Development: Design high-quality visual materials for both digital and print platforms, ensuring alignment with organizational branding guidelines. Collaborate with the communications team to translate communication messages into engaging visual formats.
  • Communications Support: Develop tailored written and visual content for diverse audiences across multiple channels, including public information materials and safety messaging during emergencies. Assist in drafting and reviewing press releases and digital content, and manage social media content to strengthen engagement.
  • Event Coordination and Support: Assist in planning and executing events, ensuring smooth logistics and operations. Design branding materials and represent the organization at events to engage stakeholders.
  • Disaster Management and Emergency Communication: Support emergency response activities, including the distribution of relief supplies and the development of communication products. Produce multimedia content that highlights response efforts and preparedness messaging.
  • Photography and Videography: Capture high-quality images and video content for programs and events, producing multimedia storytelling content that aligns with communication goals.
  • Website Management and Content Development: Maintain and update website content using a Content Management System (CMS), ensuring accuracy and usability while troubleshooting technical issues.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess strong graphic design skills, proficiency in content creation for various platforms, and experience in event coordination. Familiarity with emergency communication practices and multimedia production is essential. The ideal candidate should demonstrate creativity, adaptability, and professionalism in their work. Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively are also required.

Educational Background:
A bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, graphic design, or a related field is required. Additional certifications in graphic design or digital media would be advantageous.

Experience:
Candidates should have at least 2-3 years of relevant experience in communications, graphic design, or a related field. Experience working in a non-profit or international organization is preferred, particularly in roles that involve advocacy and public engagement.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory. Knowledge of additional languages, particularly Spanish or French, would be considered an asset.

Additional Notes:
The position is a volunteer role with a contract duration that may be extended based on funding availability and performance. The UNICEF Jamaica office is located in Kingston, where living conditions are generally safe in certain residential areas. The Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA) is provided monthly to cover housing and living expenses, along with health insurance for up to three dependents. Additional benefits include life, health, and permanent disability insurance, as well as exit allowances for satisfactory service.
