Job Overview:
The ESG Intern position at UNDP China is designed to support the Climate and Innovation Policy (CIP) Team in integrating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles into China's financial system and corporate practices. The intern will engage in ESG research, policy analysis, and stakeholder engagement, contributing to the development of knowledge products that promote sustainable finance and responsible investment. This role is crucial in advancing China's transition to a low-carbon economy and aligning with international ESG standards. The intern will work under the guidance of the Innovation and Communication Analyst, gaining valuable experience in the field of sustainable development and ESG integration.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
  • Supporting ESG Research and Policy Analysis: Conducting desk research and literature reviews on ESG developments, preparing research briefs and analytical notes on sustainability and SDG alignment.
  • Assisting in Project Coordination and Stakeholder Engagement: Organizing workshops and stakeholder consultations, coordinating meeting schedules, and preparing briefing materials.
  • Contributing to Knowledge Products and Communications: Drafting case studies, presentations, newsletters, and communication materials related to ESG and sustainability.
  • Supporting Data Collection and Monitoring: Compiling ESG-related datasets, monitoring project progress, and tracking sustainability initiatives.
  • Performing other ad hoc duties as needed.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: a) Enrolled in a postgraduate degree program or final year of a bachelor's degree; b) Recently graduated with a university degree; c) Enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program. Preferred majors include Finance, Economics, Environmental Studies, International Relations, Public Policy, and Law. Familiarity with UN work and international development is required, along with knowledge of ESG concepts and sustainability reporting frameworks.

Educational Background:
Candidates should be pursuing or have completed a degree in relevant fields such as Finance, Economics, Environmental Studies, International Relations, Public Policy, or Law. An advanced degree is considered an asset, and familiarity with ESG concepts and sustainability reporting frameworks is strongly preferred.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have a strong interest in working within UN organizations, with sound analytical and research skills. Familiarity with ESG frameworks and sustainable finance practices is preferred, along with experience in project coordination and stakeholder engagement.

Languages:
Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are mandatory. Good English-Chinese bi-directional translation and/or interpretation skills are also required, as well as advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office software. Familiarity with AI tools is preferred.

Additional Notes:
The internship is designed for individuals who are either engaged in-person or remotely. Interns are responsible for securing their own medical insurance and must provide self-certification of good health prior to starting. They must also arrange their own travel and visa requirements. Interns are not considered staff members and cannot represent UNDP in any official capacity.
