Job Overview: The Director for Sustainable Development Goals is responsible for directing and managing the DSDG program, which supports UN processes related to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This includes overseeing initiatives such as the Technology Facilitation Mechanism, the Water Action Agenda, and the Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for Small Island Developing States (ABAS). The role requires a strong focus on providing substantive support, integrated policy analysis, and building multi-stakeholder partnerships. The Director will contribute to the formulation of the Department’s overall strategies and policies, ensuring that the Division's activities align with the broader goals of the UN. The position demands leadership in developing innovative programs and managing complex projects, while also ensuring high-quality outputs and effective coordination with various UN entities and external partners.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Director's responsibilities include directing and managing the Division for Sustainable Development Goals, providing substantive support and integrated policy analysis, and building partnerships across various stakeholders. The Director will formulate and implement the Division's work program, oversee the management of activities, and ensure timely delivery of outputs. The role also involves supporting senior management in implementing mandates, preparing publications, and reporting to intergovernmental bodies. The Director will manage administrative tasks, oversee recruitment, and guide staff development. Additionally, the Director will represent the organization at international meetings and seminars, providing expertise on sustainable development issues.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess advanced knowledge and demonstrated competence in sustainable development, particularly in the context of the 2030 Agenda. They should have proven analytical and research skills, with the ability to produce high-quality reports and papers. Familiarity with UN rules and regulations is essential, as is the ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines. Candidates should also demonstrate a commitment to gender equality and the inclusion of diverse perspectives in their work.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in sustainable development, economics, public policy, public administration, finance, natural resources management, engineering, environment, social sciences, or a related field is required. A first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
Experience: Candidates should have over fifteen years of progressively responsible experience in sustainable development, with at least five years in senior leadership roles within international organizations or government. Experience in policy formulation, managing complex programs, and leading diverse teams is essential. Familiarity with intergovernmental processes and technical assistance support to developing countries is desirable, as is experience in a senior management role within the United Nations.
Languages: English is required for this position, with a minimum proficiency level of UN Level III in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Knowledge of French is considered an asset, but not mandatory.
