We are hiring a Vice President, Rural Health. The Association of the SouthWest Region comprises six states and nearly 6.6 million citizens, with 83% of our counties categorized as rural. The Association nationally and at the SouthWest Region level has identified several high-priority strategic goals centered around Health Equity and impacting rural communities. The Vice President of Rural Health will be the first position of its kind within the American Heart Association; a trailblazer by all accounts. The successful candidate will work across the organization and enterprise, with internal partners and stakeholders at every level of rural ecosystems, to lead and drive the strategy that will have a transformational impact on the lives of rural America. The candidate will be a dynamic leader with a science-based, public health and/or patient-care background who is comfortable leading new teams and driving continuous quality improvement on new and emergent strategies. They will bring relationships, trust, and insights from having impacted and served rural communities.

This is a remote position and is open to the six states of the SouthWest region, including Arkansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, and Wyoming. This position will include approximately 25% travel within the six state region.

Responsibilities

The Vice President of Rural Health is responsible for the long-term strategy and daily execution of the SouthWest Rural Health Plan and will supervise the SouthWest Rural Health Team. The VP ensures strategic Coordination across departments including Community Impact, Community CPR, Quality Improvement, Advocacy, Youth Market and Development. To ensure effective and cohesive implementation of the SouthWest Rural Health Plan, the VP will benchmark success and improve strategy and tactics in real time.

The VP both leads and implements programs and efforts to improve healthcare access and quality, and address risk factors in rural Arkansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, and Wyoming.

This seasoned rural health professional will develop and maintain strategic relationships with like-minded organizations including government, non-profit, foundations, schools, hospitals, and businesses. The VP will assure timely, coordinated, and strategic deployment of relevant resources within the SouthWest region that pave the way for the American Heart Association to improve impact across the United States. The VP will play a key role in encouraging and stewarding relationships that lead to and result in philanthropic and other investments to fund and fuel the Association’s impact in rural communities.

Essential duties and responsibilities include:

• Inform a strategic agenda for rural partnerships and lead rural strategy implementation

• Act as a liaison to the SouthWest Board of Directors on rural efforts, ensuring their vision is a guiding force for rural impact

• Act as a manager and convener of external rural partnerships and stakeholders; oversee planning and execution of the Rural Health Summit, ensuring an inspirational kick off with relevant content and clear actions for attendees; develop and implement a detailed follow-up plan

• Assist with the implementation the Association’s Public Health AmeriCorps program, HeartCorps, and the 18 members placed in the SouthWest region

• Plan and facilitate regular communication with internal partners and provide rural health messaging resources and support for all SouthWest staff

• Promote and support dialogue between rural health system leaders, local health and human service organizations and community leaders to improve access to essential services in rural communities

• Ensure open communication of rural priorities and alignment of objectives with other departments, including but not limited to Community Impact, Community CPR, Quality Improvement, Advocacy, Youth Market and Mission Advancement

• Support the development, deployment, and sustainability of the Rural Health Care Accelerator

• Coordinate with the Advocacy department to advise and plan staffing of Lobby days for the promotion of rural Health Policy

• Identify counties in which to conduct Community Needs Assessments and act as an educational and strategic planning resource through the process

• Act as a representative of the Association in local, state, regional and national levels

• Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Top candidates will have extensive personal and/or professional knowledge of challenges faced in rural America and experience in strategic, systems level change in the rural setting. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education/Experience:

• Bachelor's Degree in Public Health, Health Sciences or related area, or equivalent work experience; Master of Public Health preferred

• Five+ years’ direct experience in rural health

• Understanding of state and federal health care laws and regulations

• Strategic planning and implementation on state or regional level, public health program implementation, public policy, or healthcare Administration; or equivalent combination of education and experience

Skills & Abilities:

• Accomplished, innovative and strategic leader

• Leading strategic planning; setting, monitoring, and adjusting benchmarks and goals based on field insight and need

• Demonstrated skill in consultation and supervision

• Demonstrated experience and innovation in Community Engagement

• Demonstrated volunteer, coalition and stakeholder leadership and management

• Strong project management and organizational skills

• Analytic self-starter

• Ability to articulate sophisticated issues including key policy issues

• Ability to give and receive constructive feedback to and from colleagues, supervisors, and team members

Computer Skills:

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint required. Proficiency with email required. Ability to learn and adapt to new technology related to the position.

Compensation & Benefits

Salary minimum to midpoint of the range is $102,240 to $158,970. Pay is commensurate with experience; geographic differentials to the pay range may apply.
