OBJECTIVE OF THE OFFICE/DEPARTMENT This requisition is for employment at the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO)/Regional Office of the World Health Organization (WHO) The Communicable Diseases and Environmental Determinants of Health Department (CDE) promotes, coordinates, and implements technical cooperation activities directed toward the surveillance, prevention, control, elimination and/or reduction of communicable diseases, zoonoses and environmental threats to health that are technically sound and appropriate for the political and sociocultural context in which they are implemented. It strives to achieve a sustainable impact on health by providing normative guidance, furthering the implementation of evidence-based interventions, fostering alliances that strengthen country capacity, improving the effectiveness of inter-country collaboration, and facilitating policy and decision-making processes.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES Under the direct supervision of the Specialist, Leishmaniasis and the general guidance of the Unit Chief, Neglected, Tropical and Vector-Borne Diseases (CDE/VT), the incumbent is responsible for, but not necessarily limited to, the following assigned duties: a) Support the implementation of technical cooperation efforts to strengthen leishmaniasis surveillance and control in the Region of the Americas; b) Provide Technical Support for development of activities and training in laboratory diagnosis, treatment, surveillance and control of human leishmaniasis cases, vectors and reservoirs; c) Contribute to the preparation of analyses, reports and dissemination of epidemiological data using relevant software, including R, QGIS, Corel Draw, Excel; d) Provide support on training in surveillance and control of canine visceral leishmaniasis, including sample collection and preparation of shipments to the reference laboratory; e) Collaborate in the preparation of funding proposals for leishmaniasis control to submit to international financial agencies and other donors; f) Monitor the indicators of the leishmaniasis elimination as a public health problem, road map targets of WHO and Plan of Action to Strengthen the Surveillance and Control of Leishmaniasis in the Americas, 2017-2022; g) Support Coordination with other technical entities for the development and implementation of canine visceral leishmaniasis tools in the Region, among other topics; h) Support the development of strategies and transversal and integrated opportunities to improve Leishmaniasis surveillance and control activities in the Region; i) Prepare timely and accurate project reports and other documentation to comply with donor commitments and PAHO requirements; j) Collaborate to improve the collection of epidemiological information and surveillance systems for leishmaniasis, and strengthen links between leishmaniasis and other Disease Control programs; k) Perform other related duties, as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Education: Essential: A bachelor’s degree in a health-related science from a recognized university.

Desirable: Specific training in leishmaniasis in the areas of reservoir, vectors, clinical and treatment of cases from a recognized institution.

Experience: Essential: Three years of combined national and international experience in implementing and working with leishmaniasis (diagnosis, treatment, surveillance and control of human cases, vector and reservoir; including the participation in technical cooperation programs and the provision of training in different areas of Leishmaniasis).

Technical Expertise: - Professional expertise in leishmaniasis and training in clinical and laboratory diagnostics and treatment; experience in one health approach with the use of methods in surveillance and control of human cases, sand flies and domestic reservoirs.

- Knowledge and practical expertise in technical cooperation programs in leishmaniasis.

- Specific knowledge to empower professionals in surveillance and control, focus investigations and management of leishmaniasis.

- Expertise in working with leishmaniasis Information Data and its Data Management processes and analyses.

- Proven skills for the maintenance, updating and implementation of software.

- Practical expertise in implementing strategies for data management (including quality check, timeliness, etc.).

- In-depth knowledge and use of practices for training and developing standards related to the implementation of leishmaniasis.

- Ability to analyze technical information and synthesize inputs from multiple sources; support the development of guidelines and training materials.

- Strong professional oral and writing skills, including the development of reports, oral presentations, and technical/persuasive documents for consideration at the highest levels of the Organization.

Languages: Very good knowledge of English or Spanish with a working knowledge of the other language. Knowledge of Portuguese and/or French would be an asset.

IT Skills: Demonstrated ability to effectively utilize software programs (such as Corel Draw, Excel, QGIS, R, among others) and knowledge of relevant electronic systems and/or platforms for Information Systems. Other IT skills and knowledge of other software programs would be an asset.

REMUNERATION Monthly Salary: (Net of taxes) US$3,181.00 (Salary non-negotiable) Post Adjustment: US$874.78 This amount is to be considered as indicative since variations may occur each month either upwards or downwards due to currency exchange rate fluctuations or inflation.
