Job Overview:
The State Government Relations Director plays a crucial role in representing the American Heart Association at the state level, particularly in Montana and Wyoming. This position is responsible for engaging with state legislators and agencies to promote the AHA's public policy agenda. The director will strategically coordinate advocacy efforts, working closely with staff, volunteers, and partner organizations to build support for key policy issues. The role requires a proactive approach to monitoring legislative developments and mobilizing grassroots efforts to influence policy outcomes. The director will also provide training and resources to volunteers and staff, ensuring effective communication and advocacy strategies are implemented across the organization.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The State Government Relations Director will meet with state legislators and officials to advocate for the AHA's policy issues. Responsibilities include monitoring state-level legislative and regulatory matters, conducting policy research, and developing support materials. The director will participate in coalition-building efforts, recruit members for advocacy committees, and provide strategic direction for grassroots mobilization. Additionally, the role involves collaborating with communications staff on media advocacy, preparing lobbying reports, and delivering advocacy training to volunteers and staff. The director will also attend relevant meetings and contribute to the development of the annual state legislative agenda in collaboration with advocacy committees.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor's Degree in Public Policy, Political Science, Law, or a related field, or have equivalent work experience. A minimum of three years of experience in legislative and regulatory lobbying is required, along with demonstrated success in building and managing advocacy coalitions. Strong oral and written communication skills are essential, as well as the ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines. Knowledge of Strategic Planning, budgeting, and work management principles is also necessary for this role.
Educational Background:
A Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field such as Public Policy, Political Science, or Law is required. Equivalent work experience may be considered in lieu of a formal degree, but candidates should have a strong foundation in policy Analysis and advocacy.
Experience:
The ideal candidate will have at least three years of experience in legislative and regulatory lobbying, with a proven track record of success in advocacy efforts. Experience in building coalitions and managing grassroots campaigns is essential, as well as familiarity with media advocacy tactics. Candidates should be adept at handling multiple projects and navigating complex political environments.
