Job Overview:
The State Government Relations Director plays a crucial role in representing the American Heart Association at the state level, primarily engaging with the state legislature and relevant agencies to promote the Association's public policy agenda. This position requires strategic Coordination of advocacy efforts to support the AHA's priorities, working collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and partner organizations. The director will be responsible for building awareness and support for legislative initiatives, integrating advocacy messaging into various programs and events, and ensuring that the AHA's voice is heard in critical policy discussions. The role demands a proactive approach to monitoring legislative issues, conducting policy research, and developing materials that advance the AHA's agenda. The director will also participate in coalition-building efforts and provide training and support to volunteers and staff, ensuring that advocacy efforts are well-coordinated and effective.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The State Government Relations Director will meet with state legislators and their staff to garner support for advocacy issues, monitor state-level legislative and regulatory developments, and inform AHA volunteers and staff about emerging advocacy concerns. Responsibilities include conducting policy research, developing support materials, recruiting spokespersons, and preparing testimony to advance the legislative agenda. The director will also engage in coalition-building efforts, provide staff support to Volunteer advocacy committees, and collaborate on the development of an annual legislative agenda. Additionally, the director will oversee grassroots mobilization efforts, coordinate media advocacy initiatives, prepare lobbying reports, and deliver advocacy presentations and training sessions. Participation in AHA meetings and events is also required to ensure alignment with organizational goals and strategies.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor's Degree in Public Policy, Political Science, Law, or a related field, or have equivalent work experience. A minimum of three years of experience in legislative and regulatory lobbying, as well as demonstrated success in building and managing issue advocacy coalitions, is required. Candidates should have experience in developing and implementing grassroots and media advocacy tactics, along with outstanding oral and written communication skills. Proficiency in policy Analysis and Technical Writing is essential, as is the ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines. Knowledge of Strategic Planning, budgeting, and work management principles is also necessary for this role.

Educational Background:
The position requires a Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field such as Public Policy, Political Science, or Law. Equivalent work experience may be considered in lieu of formal education. Candidates should have a strong foundation in policy analysis and advocacy, supported by relevant academic training or professional development.

Experience:
The ideal candidate will have at least three years of experience in legislative and regulatory lobbying, with a proven track record of success in advocacy efforts.
