The American Heart Association (AHA) has an excellent opportunity for a Sr. Grassroots Lead , Federal . The position is located in the Washington, D.C. metro region.
In this role, you will develop and execute comprehensive grassroots campaigns, engaging volunteers to help move public Health Policy through the United States Congress and federal agencies. You will collaborate with Federal Government relations colleagues on issue advocacy campaign strategy, where you will serve as the grassroots engagement expert in the strategic planning process. You’ll ensure the inclusion of influential grassroots strategies and tactics to advance the policy priorities of the Association at the federal level. Additional responsibilities include organizing and coordinating the recruitment, mobilization, retention and recognition of volunteer advocates within the You’re the Cure network through regular communication, advocate training, and online and offline calls to action.

Provide grassroots expertise; develop volunteer and public engagement strategies and tactics for federal legislative and regulatory issue campaigns
Develop and implement strategic plans around the recruitment, mobilization and retention of You’re the Cure advocates
Lead and coordinate advocate activities in support of our federal policy priorities
Activate and engage You’re the Cure advocates in offline tactics as appropriate to impact public policy campaigns. Examples include rallies, spokesperson opportunities, phone call campaigns, events, etc.
Support federal lobby day or fly-in events designed to promote the association’s advocacy agenda. Oversee in-district meeting efforts.
Maintain regular communication with You’re the Cure advocates to keep them engaged and active throughout the year- including action alerts, newsletters, email updates, social media messaging, etc.
Write and launch action alerts to mobilize volunteers to contact lawmakers, regulators and industry leaders.
Plan and implement grassroots training for American Heart Association volunteers and staff as needed to educate on our mission, priorities and the potential impact of advocacy.
Regularly evaluate You’re the Cure program metrics, including but not limited to: tracking performance of communications and analyzing network trends through web-based action and reporting systems.
Identify opportunities for the recruitment of grassroots networkers and key contact volunteers
Foster integration opportunities with internal staff partners to further grow the You’re the Cure network and provide meaningful volunteer engagement opportunities through advocacy.

Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science, Communications, related area or equivalent work experience.
Minimum of five (5) years of experience in community organizing and mobilization, volunteer management, public policy, Public Health, government relations, or political and/or issue campaigns.
Demonstrated ability to lead peer workgroups.
Ability to recruit, direct, coach, monitor, and supervise volunteers
Working knowledge of grassroots advocacy principles
Ability to implement programs and initiatives by engaging all key partners and constituents.
Exceptional oral and written communications skills.
Demonstrated ability to simultaneously manage multiple, complex projects in varying stages of development under time constraints.
Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision; self-starter.
Must be able to travel overnight approx. 10% of the time.
Here are some of the preferred skills we are looking for:
Experience with supporting integrated campaign strategies- media advocacy, grassroots mobilization, coalition-building and lobbying- to advance public policy goals.
Basic understanding and skills to support social media outreach.
Use and management of web-based grassroots action platforms for creating campaigns, sending alerts and managing volunteer and legislator information
Knowledge of the federal legislative and regulatory processes
