Job Overview:
The Shelter Technical Assistant position is designed to provide essential program support and assist in the implementation of Shelter Programme activities. This role involves day-to-day operations and requires the technical assistant to deliver a range of support within their area of expertise. The position is crucial for ensuring that shelter-related activities are executed effectively, particularly in emergency contexts. The technical assistant will work closely with the Shelter Officer to facilitate various tasks, including emergency response, Community Engagement, and training initiatives. The role demands a proactive approach to problem-solving and a commitment to adhering to NRC policies and guidelines. The Shelter Technical Assistant will also be responsible for maintaining communication with communities, monitoring project progress, and contributing to the overall success of the Shelter Programme.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Shelter Technical Assistant will have a variety of responsibilities, including but not limited to: adhering to NRC policies, tools, handbooks, and guidelines; assisting with the implementation of the CC portfolio according to the action plan; independently implementing procedures and activities within their core competency; organizing and delivering tasks in line with priorities and standards; developing and maintaining knowledge in their specialist area; using initiative for problem-solving; preparing status reports as required; ensuring proper documentation; assisting the Shelter Officer in emergency response activities, including rapid needs assessments and monitoring; engaging with communities for project updates and addressing potential issues; supporting the Shelter Officer in training initiatives for beneficiaries and community groups; conducting Data Collection and suggesting improvements for activity quality; and undertaking any additional duties as assigned by the Shelter Officer. Extensive field travel and flexibility to work under challenging conditions are essential.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess experience working as an Assistant in humanitarian or recovery contexts, with a proven track record in complex and volatile environments. Documented results related to the responsibilities of the position are required. Fluency in local languages such as Kachin, Ta’ang, or Shan is mandatory, along with some knowledge of English. Experience in providing training is also essential. Candidates should have a diploma or college degree relevant to the technical skills required for the position, along with at least two years of humanitarian experience working with communities, local NGOs, or community-based organizations. Basic computer skills, including proficiency in Word and Excel, are necessary, as well as knowledge of construction activities and monitoring.
Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes at least a diploma or college degree in a relevant field that provides the necessary technical skills and knowledge. This educational foundation is crucial for effectively performing the duties associated with the Shelter Technical Assistant role.
Experience:
The position requires a minimum of two years of experience working in humanitarian contexts, particularly with communities, local NGOs, or community-based organizations. Previous experience in training and capacity-building initiatives is also highly valued, as is familiarity with the Shan area and its context.
Languages:
Fluency in local languages such as Kachin, Ta’ang, or Shan is mandatory for effective communication with communities. Additionally, some knowledge of English is required to facilitate reporting and collaboration with international partners. Proficiency in at least one ethnic language is essential for this role.
