Job Overview:
The Senior Director of Principal and Major Gifts is responsible for providing strategic leadership and management of the principal and major gift sub-department within MSF-USA. This role involves raising significant revenue from individual and family donors through personalized engagement strategies aimed at securing six, seven, and eight-figure gifts. The current Fundraising program generates approximately $140 million in revenue, with expectations for substantial growth in the coming years. The Senior Director will focus on scaling the program, enhancing donor engagement infrastructure, and developing a strategy for leadership and Board of Advisor involvement. This position requires collaboration with the Chief Development Officer, management team, and Board of Advisors to ensure alignment in donor engagement efforts, driven by data-centric decision-making.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Senior Director will be responsible for a variety of key functions, including: 1. Prospecting: Identifying and pursuing strategic opportunities that align with MSF-USA's mission and create long-term value by developing new audience segments and donors. 2. Donor Cultivation, Engagement, and Management: Building trust and loyalty with potential and existing donors, updating them on activities, and fostering long-term relationships with key donor segments. 3. Fundraising: Securing reliable and sustainable resources that align with MSF-USA's commitments. 4. Brand Positioning: Driving awareness and consideration through effective brand positioning and implementation of brand plans. 5. Best-in-Class Fundraising Systems: Championing the latest technological systems and capabilities to enhance donor engagement and fundraising outcomes. 6. Leadership and Direction: Setting and communicating the strategy for achieving the organization's mission and inspiring a diverse workforce to commit to these goals. 7. Donor Experience Mapping: Integrating donor perspectives across organizational functions to enhance the donor journey. 8. Donor Relationship Development: Developing and implementing relationship management plans for strategic accounts to build key relationships at various levels. 9. Performance Management: Managing and reporting on the performance of the fundraising function, setting objectives for direct reports, and ensuring accountability for achieving business goals.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates for the Senior Director position should possess a strong background in fundraising, particularly in major gifts and donor engagement. They should have demonstrated experience in developing and executing successful fundraising strategies, as well as a proven track record of building relationships with high-net-worth individuals and families. Strong leadership skills, excellent communication abilities, and a deep understanding of the nonprofit sector are essential. Additionally, candidates should be adept at using data to inform decision-making and strategy development.
Educational Background:
A bachelor's degree is required for this position, with a preference for candidates holding advanced degrees in relevant fields such as nonprofit management, business Administration, or public health. Educational qualifications should reflect a strong foundation in fundraising principles and practices, as well as an understanding of the humanitarian sector.
Experience:
The ideal candidate should have at least 10 years of experience in fundraising, with a focus on major gifts and Donor Relations. Experience in a leadership role within a nonprofit organization is highly desirable, as is familiarity with the international humanitarian landscape. Candidates should demonstrate a history of successfully managing teams and driving fundraising initiatives that result in significant revenue growth.
Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in additional languages, particularly Spanish or French, is considered a valuable asset and may enhance the candidate's ability to engage with diverse donor populations.

This position is full-time and based in New York City.
