The Team

The Director" id="link" class="link">Senior Director of Financial Planning and Analysis is a full time position responsible for creating, maintaining and enhancing the agency’s financial reporting systems that support HQ and field decision making and fulfill the organization’s external reporting requirements. Responsibilities include organizational budget preparation, analysis and updates; analysis to support Mercy Corps’ NICRA calculation and serving as the agency’s point-of-contact with our oversight agency; leading the continued implementation of the agency’s new financial planning, forecasting, and analysis software; and performing special projects and ad hoc analysis, as needed.

The Senior Director of Financial Planning and Analysis will assist in ensuring that Mercy Corps financial systems, processes and procedures are effective and efficient. They will provide leadership, direction and accountability in managing and coordinating agency’s resources.

The opportunity to work with Mercy Corps in this capacity represents a chance to contribute significantly and to define best practices and benchmarks in financial management. The Senior Director of Financial Planning and Analysis must be highly self-directed, innovative, passionate and able to work closely with and support the CFO and other members of the senior finance staff.

The Senior Director is expected to demonstrate the highest ethical standards, a deep sense of collegiality, as well as a strong desire to create positive change on a large scale and to see his/her work in finance as directly linked to and supportive of the organization’s impact and vision. Duties will entail many complex and challenging tasks Essential Responsibilities

Strategy & Vision

  • Lead and manage Mercy Corps’ organizational financial planning, analysis and reporting function in support of the strategic direction and vision set by the Board and Executive Management.
  • Prioritize and translate strategic vision and initiatives into actionable work plans and the annual budget.
  • Manage and give direction to the organization’s budget development process.
  • Develop and implement budget forecasting models and review performance against plans.
  • Perform analysis and make recommendations regarding new initiatives, entities or programs.
Financial Reporting & Analysis

  • Design, prepare and distribute regular and specific financial reports and analysis, assuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Create and maintain performance and financial metrics. Frame them in dashboards, slide presentations and other reporting mechanisms that best ensure the data is meaningful and clear and fits the audience it serves.
  • Create and maintain report templates for the Board Report and Senior Management packages and coordinate the regular preparation of these reports.
  • Create and maintain templates for grant financial reporting, including field-level budget vs. actual reports as well as donor reports. Manage and update grant-level budget information.
  • Create and maintain templates for administrative financial reporting, including budget vs. actual. Manage and update administrative budget information.
  • Create and maintain templates to analyze the agency’s core revenue including ICR
  • Prepare annual NICRA calculations and serve as point-of-contact with NICRA regulatory agency.
Representation & Leadership

  • Participate in the agency’s recruitment, selection, orientation and training of teams.
  • Liaise with the Joint Finance Committee of the Board.
  • Provide mentoring, training and staff development, helping to develop highly effective finance team performance with an eye towards development of career paths and internal promotion.
Reports Directly To: Chief Financial Officer Works Directly With:

  • Senior Leadership Team including CEO, SVP Programs, Regional Program Directors
  • Senior Finance Leadership including Corporate Finance, International Finance, Treasury, Finance Compliance Support Unit, MCE Finance, and Internal Audit
  • Resource Development, Human Resources, Facilities, and Program Administration teams
Accountability to Participants and Stakeholders

Mercy Corps team members are expected to support all efforts toward accountability, specifically to our program participants, community partners, other stakeholders, and to international standards guiding international relief and development work. We are committed to actively engaging communities as equal partners in the design, monitoring and evaluation of our field projects.

Minimum Qualification & Transferable Skills

  • BA/S or equivalent in accounting or relevant field is required
  • Solid Accounting background and knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) is required
  • 5-7 years of financial or Business Management experience is required
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience working in collaboration with leadership across organizations
  • Demonstrated ability to do quantitative and qualitative analysis and financial modeling accurately is required
  • Experience with MS Office, MS Excel, FP&A, and Accounting (general ledger) software is required
  • Knowledge of US government grant processes, procedures, and auditing requirements is highly desirable
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating and representing across multiple departments and functions to successful bridge strategic priorities
  • Experience with non-profits or federally funded organizations is highly desirable
  • Depth of experience in various operational roles is highly desirable
Success Factors

The Senior Director of FP&A has strong analytical and problem-solving abilities and is able to conduct research, Data Analysis and resolve complex problems. S/he is able to identify and analyze critical financial aspects of new, ambiguous, and highly complex operational initiatives, and to structure resources to successfully implement those initiatives. S/he has excellent listening and oral and written communication skills, and is able to effectively communicate accounting and financial concepts and information to both finance and non-finance personnel. S/he is able to prioritize their workload and function effectively at all levels of the organization in a cross-cultural, interdisciplinary environment, and work under pressure to complete multiple tasks and meet demands and deadlines with a positive, constructive attitude under minimal supervision. S/he has a strong sense of responsibility, professionalism and thoroughness and is able to balance strategic vision with strong attention to detail. S/he is confident and tactful with participatory leadership skills and compassionate decisiveness.

Minimal travel to Mercy Corps programs overseas.
