Job Description

1.     Organizational Context

  1. Organizational Setting

    The post is located in the News and Media Division in the Office of the Director General.  The News and Media Division is responsible for overseeing the Organization’s press, media-related and social-media activities, including photographic and video productions, as well as producing engaging content to promote awareness and understanding of intellectual property and WIPO’s activities.
  2. Purpose Statement

    The Senior Digital Communications Officer provides expertise in all areas of WIPO’s online communications, with particular responsibility for the development and implementation of social media strategies in support of WIPO’s communication goals and managing WIPO’s official social media communications.
  3. Reporting Lines

    The incumbent works under the supervision of the Director of the Division.
2.      Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent will perform the following principal duties: a.   Develop and oversee execution of WIPO’s Social Media Strategy in support of the Organization’s communication and stakeholder engagement goals.

b.   Oversee the operations and development of decentralized social-media presences in the Organization, including Coordination of communication, advice on best practices, training, as well as overseeing the creation of new decentralized presences from conceptualization to launch into production.

c.   Represent WIPO for social media related matters with internal and external stakeholders, develop strategic partnerships with other stakeholder organizations, influencers and major social-media networks.

d.   Oversee and manage all of WIPO’s central social media presences, including content creation/approval, community management and reputational risk mitigation.

e.   Responsible for the full cycle of the Organization’s social media campaigns - from concept stage to final evaluation.

f.    Develop the overall strategy and oversee the development, execution and optimization of the Organization’s paid Social Campaigns.

g.   Develop and formulate advice on WIPO’s internal and external social media policies and messaging guidelines.

h.   Manage the social-media staff, contractors, interns, and/or contracted agencies; includes work planning, management, and performance evaluation.

i.    Manage the Division’s social-media analytics and reporting framework/operations with respect to the Organization’s Program and Budget, Performance Reports and other ad hoc reporting needs. Advises on social-media analytics and reporting for decentralized organizational presences.

j.    Perform other related duties, as required.

3.      Requirements

Education (Essential)

Advanced university degree in communications, international relations, Digital Marketing or related field.  A first-level university degree plus an additional two years of professional experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience (Essential)

At least seven years of relevant, progressively responsible professional experience in corporate communications or related area in an international setting, with a focus on planning and delivering digital and social media communications, including social media campaigns.

Experience in managing a social media team.

Experience (Desirable)

Experience in managing web content and digital projects.

Language (Essential)

Excellent spoken and written knowledge of English.

Language (Desirable)

Good knowledge of French and knowledge of other UN official languages.

Job Related Competencies (Essential)

Extensive knowledge of social media trends, platforms, tools, metrics and best practices Political judgment and ability to anticipate potential sensitivities.

Good knowledge of social media metrics/analytics as well as familiarity with Google Analytics or equivalent.

Job Related Competencies (Desirable)

Excellent project management skills, including knowledge of PRINCE2 methodology.

Knowledge of web content Management Systems.

Knowledge of intellectual property or committment to develop such knowledge.

5.        Information

Mobility:  WIPO staff members are international Civil Servants subject to the authority of the Director General and may be assigned to any activities, office or duty station of the Organization.  Accordingly, the selected candidate may be required to move from time to time to new functions and/or to another duty station.

Annual salary:

Total annual salary consists of a net annual salary (net of taxes and before medical insurance and pension fund deductions) in US dollars and a post adjustment.  Please note that this estimate is for information only.  The post adjustment multiplier (cost of living allowance) is variable and subject to change (increase or decrease) without notice.  The figures quoted below are based on the May 2021 rate of 85.0%   Salaries and allowances are paid in Swiss francs at the official rate of exchange of the United Nations.

Additional Information

Initial period of one year, renewable, subject to satisfactory performance.  No fixed-term appointment or any extension hereof shall carry with it any expectancy of, nor imply any right to, (further) extensions or conversion to a permanent appointment.
