Job Overview:
The Senior Development Director position at the American Heart Association is a pivotal role that focuses on generating revenue for the Heart Challenge Campaign, which includes the signature Heart Walk event. This position is based in Oakland, CA, and is situated within a fast-paced sales environment where the primary responsibility is to drive revenue in support of the AHA's mission. The Director will be expected to achieve specific revenue targets, with the potential to earn an incentive of up to 25% of their base salary based on performance. The role requires a proactive approach to Fundraising and Donor Relations, as well as the ability to manage and lead a team effectively. Duties and Responsibilities:
The Senior Development Director will be responsible for a wide range of duties, including:
- Demonstrating leadership competencies and employing effective management techniques in the recruitment, selection, supervision, and development of staff.
- Managing the Heart Challenge campaign by implementing best practices and achieving revenue goals that align with funding for research, public health, and community services.
- Identifying, recruiting, and engaging a diverse Volunteer leadership base to support campaign growth, including building recruitment and executive leadership committees.
- Prospecting, soliciting, and stewarding high-level corporate and individual donors, while developing year-round cultivation plans to ensure excellent donor relations.
- Providing support in planning, developing, and evaluating campaigns and events, ensuring alignment with best practices and timelines.
- Collaborating with division, region, and association-wide teams to ensure alignment with organizational goals and provide consistent support for fundraising initiatives.
- Ensuring the team operates within financial boundaries and adheres to the Association's fiscal policies and applicable laws.
- Communicating proactively with Senior Leadership and delivering on commitments to internal and external stakeholders.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates for the Senior Development Director position should possess the following qualifications:
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in fundraising, sales, or a related field.
- A strong initiative to prospect and secure new business, with a proven track record of donor-centric results.
- Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to travel locally and access reliable transportation.
- Physical capability to lift and move large objects, with assistance as needed.
Educational Background:
While a university or college degree is preferred, equivalent experience in a relevant field may also be considered. The ideal candidate should have a strong understanding of fundraising principles and practices, as well as experience in managing relationships with high-level leaders.
Experience:
The position requires at least 5 years of relevant experience in fundraising or sales, with a focus on securing new business and managing donor relationships. Experience in cultivating relationships with C-Suite executives and high-level leaders is highly desirable.
Languages:

Additional Notes:
This is a full-time position with an expected salary range of $86,900 to $104,310, commensurate with experience. The AHA offers a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, and retirement plans, as well as performance-based incentives. Employees are entitled to a minimum of 16 days of Paid Time Off (PTO) per year, increasing with seniority, along with 12 paid holidays.
