Job Overview:
The Senior Development Director position at the American Heart Association in Columbus is a pivotal role that combines leadership and hands-on Fundraising efforts. This position is designed for an individual who can effectively coach and supervise a team of four fundraising staff members, including three development directors and one development Coordinator. The Senior Development Director will take the lead on the Heart Challenge campaign, which is a significant fundraising initiative aimed at generating revenue through corporate sponsorships and individual donations. The role requires a proactive approach to engage with local businesses and individuals, fostering relationships that will contribute to the financial success of the organization. The position is full-time and offers a hybrid work schedule, allowing for flexibility in work arrangements while maintaining a strong focus on achieving fundraising goals.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Senior Development Director will be responsible for a variety of key functions, including but not limited to: prospecting and securing local corporate sponsorships and individual donations; managing relationships with sophisticated Circle of Excellence/A-Level companies; guiding and directing assigned staff to meet and exceed fundraising goals; recruiting and leading executive Volunteer leadership and volunteer committees; developing detailed profiles on top businesses within the market area to secure their involvement; implementing event Logistics based on national best practices; and ensuring that all fundraising activities align with the mission and values of the American Heart Association. This role requires a strategic mindset and the ability to analyze fundraising reports and goals to drive success.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates for the Senior Development Director position should possess a minimum of 3 years of experience in fundraising, outside sales, or a similar capacity within a non-profit organization. Experience with major gifts is preferred, as is at least 1 year of management experience. This management experience can be part of the 3-year related experience requirement. Candidates should demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to present to large and small groups, facilitate discussions, and train others. Proficiency in analyzing numerical goals and fundraising reports is essential, along with basic knowledge of Microsoft Office. The ability to travel locally up to 75% of the time is required, and candidates must have reliable transportation.
Educational Background:
A Bachelor’s degree is preferred for this position, although equivalent experience may be considered. The educational background should ideally include coursework or training relevant to fundraising, Business Management, or a related field that supports the responsibilities of the role.
Experience:
The ideal candidate will have at least 3 years of relevant experience in fundraising or sales, with a strong preference for those who have worked in non-profit organizations. Additionally, candidates should have at least 1 year of experience in a management role, which can be part of the overall experience requirement. Experience gained through direct involvement in American Heart Association projects may also be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Languages:
While specific language requirements are not mentioned, strong verbal and written communication skills in English are mandatory. Additional language skills may be considered an asset, particularly in diverse communities where the AHA operates.
