MdM currently works in more than 30 countries across all continents where it focuses on 5 priority areas: Emergency and crisis, sexual and reproductive health, harm reduction, migrants and displaced populations (health rights), health and environment.

The Emergency Unit oversees the organization’s global emergency preparedness and response activities.

Our mission is to re-establish the continuum of care where disrupted or non-existent in the wake of a natural or manmade disaster and in the case of both forgotten and long-standing crises, where a vulnerable population can no longer access care.


Under the responsibility of the Emergency Operations Manager, you are part of an emergency team that can be deployed either on emergency settings or in a roving capacity in the field. You may be deployed to launch new interventions or support existing MdM country operations.

As per your assignment, you are subjected to be deployed as emergency responses Coordinator ; for temporary gap filling or to perform specific tasks (e.g. training, mentoring or preparedness activities).

The missions are diverse in terms of context or types of responsibilities.

You have the critical responsibility to assess, Design, implement and monitor MdM operations. As HQ staff, you are the link between the field mission and HQ and are responsible for sharing recommendations and monitoring their implementation.

As part of the emergency team, your main responsibilities are to:
  • Lead exploratory and fact-finding missions in countries whith or without MdM France presence : context assessment, stakeholders Mapping, strategy design together with the emergency team members in context where MdM is operating (base opening/acting as field coordinator) and in new field of operations (mission opening/act as General Coordinator)
  • Act as interim general coordinator (head of mission) when requested (gap-filling)
During these missions, you will strive for improvements and, if needed, restructure the mission’s organization in order to guarantee the quality of interventions by redefining operational priorities of the mission, taking the lead if necessary :
  • When temporarily assigned to a regular mission, take the necessary measures to enhance or implement an efficient information flow and management system
  • Oversee field finance, HR, supply chain and safety and security, ensuring adherence with policy and procedure and responsiveness to program needs
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with Coordination structures and stakeholders both within and outside the organization
  • Proactively identify, assess, monitor and implement measures to reduce or control risks that may impact Field Operations and program delivery
  • Act as security focal point for area of operation, oversee implementation of security management plan and adherence to standard operating procedures
You will also fulfil the following non-field emergency functions with the HQ Emergency unit:
  • Provide specific support related to emergency preparedness and response for MdM country program teams
  • Contribute to developing operational tools for MdM emergency operations
  • Contribute to the continuing development of the overall strategic approach in emergency health response
  • Capitalize on experience and develop lessons learnt
The duration of each mission assignment is a maximum of 3 months and will be followed by recuperation time.

Deployments will represent up to 80% of work time and non-field-based activities can be up to 20% of the work time.


Status : Employee Permanent contract or fixed-term contract possible (12 months minimum) Starting date: as soon as possible Gross monthly salary: 3 412 euros Premium equal to one month salary paid in two instalments - minimum of 6 months seniority required Working conditions bonus depending on the time spent on the field (198.18 euros gross per month maximum) Transportation cost (100% HQ-mission, 50 % home-HQ), vaccines and visas covered Accommodation expenses covered in the field Food expenses covered in the field, meal vouchers during the presence at HQ 22.5 RTT per year (recuperation days) 5 weeks of paid leaves per year Health insurance (60% covered by MdM) Insurance (repatriation…) Punctual teleworking agreement (40 days/year - minimum of 6 months seniority required) Given the current circumstances of Covid-19 pandemic, we are taking special measures to apply health protocols and hygiene measures to guarantee the safety of our staff.

Master’s degree in relief, development or related field A minimum of 2 years of experience on emergency settings in a similar position or in a position of field coordinator Experience in exploratory missions and needs assessments Experience managing donor funded programs and grants; including resource mobilization, staff management, budget oversight, monitoring and evaluation systems Excellent managerial skills Interpersonal skills, diplomacy and negotiation Demonstrable ability to lead, motivate and support teams in challenging environments Analytical and reflection skills Dynamism, rigor, reactivity, adaptability, flexibility Resistance to stress, ability to adapt to isolated or insecure environments Basic skills (Word processing, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.) Languages: Compulsory : Fluent in English and French (both written and spoken) Desirable : Spanish or Arabic You embrace the core values and support the proactive philosophy of Médecins du Monde.
